Is it true that a new smaller less expensive iPOD will be released soon? TIA

Yes. And Steve will also be announcing the iPhone, the iPad (a digital
assistant) the iBox (a TiVo like device) and the iGotcha - meaning that
none of this is true.

Any MP3 device will have to use a hard drive or flash memory for
storage. Flash memory, except in small amounts (less than 512 mb) is
more expensive than hard drives. There are two hard drive systems
suitable for iPod like devices. The speculation is that the lower cost
iPods would use the newer mini drives from Cornice. These do also have
lower prices than Toshiba's but not, I think, low enough for Apple to
make a $100 iPod.

The people who know the answer to that question are almost certainly bound
by a confidentiality agreement that forbids them to say anything until
Apple makes an official announcement.

According to the rumor, Apple will make an announcement by the end of next
week. The news will probably appear on Apple's web site the same day.

If the rumor is false, there won't be an announcement.

HAHAHAHA!

You can build your own external Firewire HD for $90 ($40 disk + $50
enclosure). The components to produce analog sound and browse the disk
can't be too expensive, considering they're build into cheap MP3 CD
players (except for the IDE interface). That would get you a desktop
version.

The expensive part of the iPod is the rechargeable battery. If they made
one which ran on AA's or external power I think it could be cheap. $150
would almost certainly be doable. How long has the $300 iPod been out? It
might be due for a price drop of $50, and considering the replacement
battery costs $99 even after the flap about it, subtract that and you're at
$151.

As another poster said, we'll know for sure by the end of the Macworld
convention next week.

A few months ago I was given an iPod that had a dead hard drive - so I
went out looking for a new drive - how much could it be, right? I was
amazed to discover that the best price I could find for the 15 and 20
gig drives were between $50 less and $50 MORE than the like sized iPod.

The replacement batteries are expensive because the companies selling
them have to get them custom made and, unlike Apple, aren't able to buy
them in large enough scale to get a low price. But for a $50 battery I
suspect the company pays less than $20.

The battery can apparently be sold at a profit for $50. The hard drive,
on the other hand, has historically cost as much as the iPod in toto
when packaged as a CardBus device.

Can anyone tell me whether the "iPod mini" uses flash memory or a very
small hard disk or some other kind of storage ?

I've read that it's using the new Hitachi/IBM 4 GB Microdrive.

For me this is a showstopper; I've not been particularly thrilled with
the shock resistence of Microdrives. And while I'm not a huge supporter
of Toshiba's drives (the ones in the big iPods, apparently), I'd rather
spend the extra money and get one of those.

Of course, Apple may have done an excellent job of cushioning the
Microdrive...or Hitachi may have made them a bit less sensitive to shock
than the 1 GB version I bought in 2002.

Yes, actually, I had read all the bumf, and nowhere did it actually say
what the storage medium is, hence my question. Do you work for MS tech
support or something ?

Thanks - yes, that is a disappointment - I was hoping that Apple had
somehow managed to get hold of some kind of next generation flash memory
at a ridiculously low price but evidently not.

Well, not on that specific page, but if you click on "Tech Specs" and
scroll down to "Capacity" you'll find "4GB, 15GB, 20GB or 40GB hard disk
drive".
