Post subject: iBook G4 RAM question
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>misc (more info?)

Hello there,

I'm looking to buy a new 12" iBook (ie the lowest-end notebook available
through applestore Smile. It looks like it takes generic PC2100 DDR266
200-pin SODIMM notebook memory... is this case? Can I buy any such DIMM
stick and expect it to work?

Specifically, I'm looking at these:

http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=379714
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=658896
http://www.tigerdirect.ca/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=6992
http://www.canadacomputers.com/cc/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=...046&cid

I'm asking because the memory upgrade prices through applestore seem a
little ridiculous... it costs 93 bucks to add 256megs through applestore,
whereas I can pick up a 512meg stick for about 70-80 bucks. (These are
CAD prices).

Thanks in advance for any help you might be able to give.

There is more to the memory specifications than just PC2100, DDR266 and
200-pin SO-DIMM. As long as the "generic" RAM meets all of the specs
Apple requires, then you can buy RAM from wherever you like and can
expect it to work right. If the store listing does not explicitly say
the RAM is compatible with the iBook, at least check the manufacturer's
site to see which of their part numbers is okay.

I looked up the first part on the PNY site, and its part number matches
what tigerdirect is selling and is listed by PNY as the number to use in
an iBook G4. I did not check the other two listings, but if they match
what PNY says should be used, the RAM should be okay. No idea on the
KingMax RAM compatibility, can't quite figure out their site for looking
up part numbers.

Apple's prices are based on what they can buy RAM for at some specific
time, plus a healthy markup for installation and profit. You can almost
always do better elsewhere. Not certain what the exchange rate and any
duty fees would do to prices on getting RAM from US stores I usually
recommend and shipping to Canada. Just make certain to get the right
RAM, restocking and ship back costs will quickly eat up any savings.

Thank you very much for that detailed reply! I recently found a
testimonial stating that the very same KingMax DIMM was successfully
installed in an iBook, so I might end up going with that.

Again, many thanks.
