Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>misc (more info?)

Due to business pressures, I'm forced to use a PC running XP pro, as well
as my much preferred Mac (Cube running 9.2) I want to run both thru one
monitor. I've been successful doing this with the typical switching device
and a Sony 20" CRT Trinitron E500. The image from the PC is great, the
image from the Mac is so-so. There's a little ghost artifact but it's
tolerable. Now, I've just switched to a 21" LCD monitor that runs at
1600x1200 res. The image from the Mac alone is great. But when I add in
the swithcing device, so I can use both computers, there's now an
intolerable ghost artifact from the Mac side. I'm using the shortest
cables I can, 3'. Is there a high end switch that will eliminate this
problem? Any other ideas??

I've asked at my local computer store, Microcenter, but they were
*absolutely* no help. The sales people there In the "switch" department all
seem to use PC's and the switches all work fine for them, and when I ask in
the Mac department I just get a dull stare, and the suggestion that I ask
the people in the "switch" department.

Thanks for any help!

John

I assume you're using an analog switch, with VGA ports, yes? You
probably want a switch with DVI ports.

Heck, no problem for me. I have personally run as many as six Macs/PCs
using only one monitor and one keyboard, even though some of those
computers were running "headless", i.e. did not have any monitor of
their own.

I used Timbuktu. (TB2)

Down side is that a seperate TB2 has to be installed on each computer.

in my case I bought combination packs from Netopia to reduce the cost.

You would need the Mac/PC two-pack, think it runs about $200.

Make sure the version you buy supports OS 9.2, _not_ OS X, also make
certain it supports PCs, because the Mac-to-Mac "dual pack" would not
work for your purposes.

I could see no defects in the screen images, no ghosts, etc.

Up side is that you can see both the Mac and PC screens simultaneously
on the monitor of your choice - - - or if you prefer, either computer's
screen full size, all on your prefered 21" LCD monitor.

Another upside is that both the Mac and PC can be simultaneously
running their own applications at full speed, all under the control of
your one keyboard and your one LCD monitor.

Yet another side benefit is that you can run your Mac Cube remotely,
directly from the PCs keyboard, should you ever desire to do that.

In other words, even though you are using the PC keyboard, it would be
almost the same as running your Cube directly.

Unfortunately, there is no demo' version of TB2 like there used to be.
