I've been considering an iPod for a while now. But I want an up-to-date
model.

Note: The price is CDN $, so it isn't as high as you think. Smile

The text says it's 30GB and comes with a dock, with would have to be
third generation. But the picture is an earlier model -- looks like
second generation, with mechanical control buttons surrounding
touch-sensitive wheel. Most likely the text is right and picture is
wrong but I would ask before buying.

Fwiw I would count the ipod generations as follows:

G1: Mechanical buttons and wheel; 5 and 10GB
G2: Mechanical buttons and touch-sensitive wheel; 10 and 20GB [?]
G3: Touch-sensitive wheel and buttons; dock; 10, 15 and 30GB
G3.5: As above but thinner and higher capacity; 10, 20 and 40GB

New firmware was introduced with G3, which means these have somewhat
enhanced functionality vis-a-vis G1 and G2. It may also mean there
will be no further firmware updates to G1/G2, though that's just
speculation on my part. I own a 10GB G1, so I hope I'm mistaken...

Thank you, Hugh. That was very good information. Your explanation of the
generations will help me a lot. Smile

I'll wait until they have the thinner models in stock. Shouldn't be too
long.

AFAIK 3rd generation (or G3 in your list) were already thinner than G1
and G2. I doubt that G3.5 is any thinner than G3, I think they just
bumped up the HD.

I'm almost sure you're right. I forgot to mention that.

Could well be. Apple's promo material for the current line makes a
big deal about them being "super slim" and "smaller than ever". I
thought that was relative to the earlier G3s, but maybe not. I
haven't seen one up close and personal yet.
