in the wintel world, there are accessories that fit into a drive bay,
and provide (usb and/or firewire) hubs, digital media readers,
thermostats (and fan controls), and even amplified speakers, in all
sorts of combinations.
i would like to add one to my g4 desktop, because i don't like the
clutter of hubs (and sons of hubs), and because i am constantly plugging
and unplugging different pieces of gear. - it seems like a Good Idea -
ideally, i would like (powered) firewire, usb + media all brought out to
the front.
but the best ones i've found in the pc world are very much tailored to
certain pc motherboards. also, my g4/466 (digital audio) doesn't have
internal connectors for firewire or usb or even for power (that i can
see). one option, although it seems inelegant, is to add a pci card
just for the extra internal usb and firewire ports.
would anyone like to share their advice and/or experience with this
rather simple type of hack?
please reply to the newsgroup.

a bit on the pricey side (because they throw in a pci card), but thanks for the
tip.
if i'm going to tie up a pci slot to do this, i would prefer something more
than usb 1.1 and firewire 400, which i've already got on the motherboard.
my current "solution" is an atech pro-2 gizmo, modified to eliminate their
extra (usb) power connection. (a small jumper from the usb power line to the
hot pin of the power jack - i can't understand why atech didn't do it this way
in the first place...) it gives me one usb 1.1 and one firewire 400 port, as
well as a couple of digital media slots, for $20 and a couple of minutes with
the soldering iron. it's still usb bus-powered (it should have been powered
off a proper 4-pin hd power connector), and the firewire is only a
pass-through, though.
