Post subject: WLAN - app to see occupied channels - iStumbler not working anymore?
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>comm (more info?)

In the past I had used iStumbler with success to see which WLAN channels
were occupied, the names of the networks, and interferences.

Now running Mac OS X 10.6, the latest release 98 of iStumbler seems not
to show all networks anymore.

Is there any other application to diagnose WLAN problems such as two
stations on the same channel etc?

TIA

Marc

Hold down the Option key and click on the Airport menu. It will show
detailed information about your current network, and if you point the
mouse at another listed network it shows a tooltip with PHY mode (e.g.
802.11n), BSSID, channel/band, security and signal strength (RSSI).

This will let you diagnose many issues with nearby networks which are
broadcasting their SSID, but not the ones which are hiding their SSID,
since the menu doesn't list them.

I haven't gone looking for a more detailed tool which is Snow Leopard
compatible (yet).

Great - thank you for the tip!

I hope we will get a tool like iStumbler for 10.6.

One tool I just found again - now testing: KisMAC
at http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/10133

More pointers welcome.

Marc-

I have KisMAC 0.2.99, but don't see how to get it to work. It comes up
with a window that never shows any Wireless stations. When I click on
"Start Scan", there is a message that says "Could not load Airport
Driver". Then I have to force-quit.

Another program that stopped working several OS X versions back, is
MacStumbler. According to their web site, MacStumbler 2.0 is coming.
You can sign up to be a beta tester.

First select
Preferences > Driver > Apple Airport Extreme Card, passive Mode
add

then select Š active mode in list
remove

this gets it working halfway, I'd say.
Any better ideas welcome.

There are apps out there for the iPhone if you happen to have one. I use
WiFiFoFum. Seems to work reasonably well.
