If you just copy the disk, I believe this is normal. If you use Disk
Utility to "restore" the old disk onto the new one, I think it should
maintain the Time Machine history. I'm not sure which hidden file(s)
that preserves, but the restore process gets everything.

Michelle-

I had already copied the old TC contents to a spare hard drive and begun
the copy back to the new TC when I read your instructions. I went ahead
and finished the copy. After setting up the new TC and re-directing
Time Machine to it, it appeared to be working OK. I was able to bring
up all of the previous backups starting with an older computer back in
June.

I just tried it again to be sure what I was saying, and it couldn't find
any old data. I went to Time Machine Preferences and it said my oldest
backup was in June. To give it a kick, I re-selected the TC "Data"
disk. Now it seems to be working again, and I can see old stuff back to
June. I'm not sure what happened or if it will happen again!

One possible problem is that I have now started using a password to
access the Time Capsule, and it isn't clear how that relates to Time
Machine's access.

So, you might try re-directing Time Machine, to see if your backup is OK
after all. Also mount the TC's HD and see what is there. If there was
somehow a new folder created that now contains a fresh-start backup,
that would explain why Time Machine can't see any older stuff.

Michelle,

I was having 10.6 TM issues and the Apple support line advised
the problem was because I had the External Hard drive formatted
using the wrong option

Double check that your Partition Map Scheme is GUID Partition Table

The bad news is you have to erase the drive to change it
