So, is the Apple menu back yet? What about clippings; I must have my
clippings.
Can I tile the window background pictures yet?
In an open or save dialog, can I click a background folder window and
have the dialog automatically take me there as I can now do in OS 9? |

The most annoying thing about OS X is that I have developed a computer
work mode that was tailor made for my convenience. No two people do things
in the same way, so when one is faced with a system that does not have
vast flexibility one is bound to become frustrated so I can sympathise
with roj. I am in the same boat. Now I am transitioning over to OS X
because all my most favored softwares have grown their advanced
capabilities in OS X with not backward fixes for OS 9. I am now flexing
the grey matter in hopes of finding a way to outfox OS X. So far I have
placed alias of my most important file groups and most used applications
on the desktop. I don't know if this is the best way to do it, but that is
far as I have got.

What 3rd-party enhancement are you using to achieve that?

I have a folder called "Apple Menu" and put it on the dock. In that
folder I have other folders for different kinds of applications,
graphics, audio, video, writing, database, utilities, games, etc. This
results in a hierarchical Apple menu of sorts. A hierarchical menu, if
you think about it, is a multidimensional container and you don't have
to make it very deep to hold lots of things. Everytime I try to count
the applications in this menu, I get bored after I pass 100. Put a
hundred applications on the linear dock and see how useful that is.
It works, but I miss the way Action Menus lets me organize the OS 9
menu and put dividers between the groups. At the top I always have
traditional "Desk Accessories", the next group is traditional "Control
Panel" things, the next group is Applications and finally the last
group is aliases to frequently used folders, documents, and servers on
other computers. My OS 9 Apple menu connects me to thousands of things
with just a single sweep of the mouse. I will sorely miss that when I
finally move to OS X. |

Clippings! Clippings! You must never use them. I can't live without
them. Highlight some text in any application, drag it to the desktop
and you have a "clipping." You can then drag that clipping into any
other application to put that text somewhere else. Or you can just
leave it in the clipping forever, which I am apt to do. It makes your
desktop a clipboard for more than just one item.
I mostly use them for grabbing bits of text off the internet that I
want to remember or use later. |

Action Files does that. But I thought Apple added it to a very late
version of OS 9. I could be wrong; I'd have to test that theory though
to be sure. Regardless, if I give up OS 9, I also have to give up
Action Files. That's a really nifty capability that I use all the time.
Usually, the place I want to put some work happens to be open in
Finder. Sometimes I'm going to be putting things is several folders via
save dialogs. I find and open those folders and leave them that way in
Finder so I can "warp" to them in the dialog with just a simple click.
It's much quicker than using those pop up menus in the dialog box.
Computers should be fast, but it's more important that they make the
operator faster because he's the slowest component in the system. |

My desktop is totally clean. I put those things on the dock and have it
hidden. |

And OS X has had them for some time. I presumed you were asking about
something which had heretofore been missing.

I stick the alias' in a folder and stick the folder on the dock.
Not quite as slick working as the Apple Menu, but it fills the
function.

Still there, just like before. Work the same way. What's the problem?

And you are missing clippings in OS X? That's really
weird, since they work just fine in 10.3.9 for me. And
have as long as I can remember in OS X, though I never,
ever use them.

Ditto.
Folder on desktop though. Been doing that since OS 7 |

Although it's not as automatic as the way Action Files worked you can
still work the same way.
Just drag the folder icon to the open/save dialog box and you'll go
there. If the folder is already open you can drag the folder icon from
the window title bar to the dialog box. You can also drag a file if you
want to overwrite an existing file (or name it similarly).
This also works with hidden files and folders, once you open them in the
Finder using "Go to Folder"

Hmmm... I think clipping are only supported by some application
programs. If I recall correctly, it was this way even back in the 9 days.

I haven't been able to get clippings in Internet Explorer in OS 9 for
the last couple of years. When I highlight and drag text to the
desktop, I get a Simpletext file. I often open it and then clip the
text I wanted, a real PITA, but I do get clippings from every other
program I can think of though.
