The original 10 gig hard drive of my 1999 iMac DV (G3/400) is full, so I
was planning to replace it with an 80 gig (or so) drive. According to
the October 2001 MacWorld, a 7200 rpm drive runs too hot for this
computer, which lacks a fan, so they recommend a 5400 rpm drive.
Unfortunately, 7200 rpm drives are the only ones available at retail
stores, so I'll have to mail order if I want a 5400 rpm drive.

My question is whether this speed consideration is theoretical, or
whether I should really try to get a 5400 rpm drive.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Regards,

Dan

I'm sure all the apple testing would suggest that the 7200 would run
to hot for your style of iMac, I have replaced several HD in these
model of imacs with 7200 drives and non of them have had any Heat
related issues, most of these units are in a Non AC lab enviroment so
unless you are running your iMac in a tiny little cube with no air
circulation in my opinion you should be fine with the 7200.

Have you considered an external fire wire drive. A lot less work than
cracking the case.

I put an 80 gig 7200 HD into a lime iMac about 8 months ago and it made it
through the Chicago summer in a top floor, uncooled apartment.

It sometimes makes a lot more sense though to just run the new drive as an
external firewire drive because then you can move it with you when you
eventually upgrade to a flatscreen iMac.

Speed is probably not an issue with this "old" iMac - the older iMacs
only have ATA/66 Buses for the hard drives - which is the primary
bottleneck for the transfer speed...

I have looked up the "official" specs from the Seagate Barracuda
ST340016A I have here in my 233MHz iMac Rev.B (it also has the ATA/66
Bus) - it's supposed to have a "sustained transfer rate" of 24-41
MBytes/s - but when measured with HardDiskToolkit on my Computer it only
has about 12 (minimum read) to 14 (maximum write) MBytes/s.

Much more important to me was the noise the HD makes while spinning.
This is primarily caused by the bearings in the disk - where FDB (fluid)
bearings are a lot quieter than the ball-bearing types.
