I want to install a DVD-R on my G4 (AGP). The manual does not
explain how to remove the old CD-ROM drive, and it is not clear
that this can be done at all without removing the power supply.

Can someone direct me to a site with instructions on how to
disassemble this properly, or is it such major surgery that I
would be better off paying some local place an extortionist price
to install the new drive?

Drop down the side door, then release the 2 plastic clips now exposed on the
side to release the plastics from the front. When the front of the Cd is
exposed, undo the now exposed front 2 screws. Start to pull out the drive
assy from the G4's front, then pull away the interface and power cables.
Pull the CD and zip if fitted out from the front. Remove the 4 screws
holding in the CD, then put the DVD-R in its place and assemble in reversed
order. It only takes about 5 minutes.
