It's again about time for me to upgrade the Powermac 4400's RAM
Please do not advise me to throw the machine away, I will not, it works
just fine with 96MB RAM, 400MHz, 40GB hard disk and DSL.
A question for the experts:
I intend to install one 32MB and one 64MB memory card.
Some cards which seem to fit the specifications are much cheaper than
those offered by Apple dealers. It may be that these are usually to be
found in Dell or IBM machines.
Can anyone help to clarify this?
Below p.s. I'll paste in the specification of the memory card which I'm
looking for, followed by a passage, in German, from the Macintosh 4400
handbook.
Cheers,
M Macpherson
p.s.
DIMM 64MB or 32MB, 168pin, 60ns, EDO 3.3Volt
(...) DIMMs mit 4 K Refresh
können ... nicht verwendet werden. |

Not quite sure what you had in there before to get 96 MB but I would
assume you have either 3 x 32 MB or a 64 MB and a 32 MB or 2 x 16 MB
and a 64 MB. Since you only have 3 slots you'll end up with either
128 MB or 160 MB. If it's an older 4400/160 the max you'll can ever
get is 96 while the newer 4400/200 will take a max 160 MB, the first
slot can only take single sided DIMMs or a 32 MB DIMM. But yes I've
used 3.3V EDO DIMMs from PCs that work fine. HTH |

I currently have 2 x 16 MB and a 64 MB. It's a 4400/200.
Following what you wrote, I need to find "3.3V EDO DIMMs from PCs that work fine". I'll start
the search locally, here in Berlin FRG.
To add some background. About 2 years ago I bought and installed a 64MB dimm for this
machine. It cost 349 deutschmarks, roughly 175 euros. A few days ago I checked the price with
my Apple dealer -- 90 euros (euro = a bit more than a US dollar). Phew, said the worker, that
card is expensive! A similar card for PC would, I guess, cost much less.
Cheers

No, because a similar card for a PC would be the same card; I've used PC
memory in a 4400. The issue is that now, in 2003, that particular form
factor is not in strong supply. Today 90 Euros will get you 512MB in an
SO-DIMM from a reputable vendor, and SO-DIMMs are expensive as current
modules go. |

What I find amazing is that you continue not to quote the message you're
responding to. Your response was fascinating to read, and I wish I had
the slightest idea what the OP wrote. I'm just wondering what it could
possibly have been that a simple "go to Data Memory Systems' web site at
www.datamem.com and click on Mac Memory Finder" wouldn't cover.
