Why would you want to deselect all mailboxes?

Why wouldn't I want to take an extra step of moving my hand to the
keyboard and pressing Command while moving my cursor to whichever
mailbox happens to be selected and clicking it, rather than simply
quitting or closing the window? Because it seems like more work for me,
with little gain. If I'm done with Mail, I don't really care what is
displayed.

Ok. I answered your question. Now you answer mine. : )

Why would you want to deselect all mailboxes?

I suppose. More work though.

It could be that few at Apple actually used that feature, I suppose.

Maybe they changed the way the left pane is created to improve it. Only
Apple knows.

You should file a bug report. You never know. : )

Because I want to generate a new mailbox that is not inside a selected
one?

If I have a mailbox selected and click on the plus sign to make a new
mailbox, the new mailbox is generated inside the selected mailbox (Mail
version 3.6 (936), Mac OS X v10.5.Cool

I submit that it's completely true. The fact that I'm allowed to change
that selection does not alter the truth of the statement.

If history is a guide, this has the earmarks of being round two of a
protracted "he said, she said". I shall not comment further, you're free
to have the last word.
