Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>apps (more info?)

I know Apple says Leopard is due out in the spring but I was hoping
someone, a developer maybe?, might be able to narrow it down a little.
I really need an intel macbook but I really want Leopard.

Since I plan to max out the specs on the macbook, and buy the APP, I
can't justify turning around a month or two later and spending $200 on
Leopard.

So...is it likely Apple will release Leopard in early March by any
chance? I can hang on until then...otherwise I probably need to buy
now and wait until my finances recoup to upgrade to Leopard.

Thanks!

Developers don't know when Leopard will be released. Some /might/ be
able to make a better guess than you or me, but it would still be a
guess. It is safe to say that few, if any, people at Apple Inc. know
the release date. If you have an urgent need for a Mac book, it seems
to me you should buy it. But, by all means, wait until early March if
you can on the (unlikely) chance that Apple will release it by then.
Please remember that Spring ends in late June, and Apple has previously
released updates on or near the last day of the promised season.

Panther was promised for Fall of 2003 and released on or about October
10. Tiger was promised for Spring of 2005 and released on or about
April 12. (Those are the dates on which I ordered them, which was as
soon as they were available.)

No one who's in a position to know is allowed to say.

First, all Mac OS X releases have retailed for $129, so I'm guessing
Leopard will be the same. Second, Amazon and other vendors have always
sold them for less, in the $100-115 range. Third, Apple has given
buyers of new Macs a small window of oppotunity to buy the next OS X
version for, I believe, $20.

When I quoted $200 I was referring to the family pack. Getting Leopard
on the Macbook would be good enough for a while but if I have to get a
Macbook with Panther then I'd buy the family pack of Leopard at release
since I'd have 5 Macs.

I meant Tiger. I have Panther on the brain for some reason.

since spring begins in late march, the chances that leopard will be out
in 'early march' are basically zero.

And if you have 2 to 5 Macs (home users, same household), you can buy
the family pack - 5 licenses for around $200.

Never before an official release date has been set, though.

If I recall correctly, that has only applied for people who bought their
new Mac AFTER the official release date of the new OS X version.

If you bought a new Mac on or after the day Tiger started shipping, and it
didn't come with a copy of Tiger, you could get a copy "free", plus $20 for
shipping & handling.

If you bought a new Mac the day before Tiger's release date, you were out
of luck.

The idea is that when you buy a new Mac, it should include the current
version of the Mac OS. If you bought a Mac on Tiger's release date, you
expected it to include Tiger; but that Mac was shipped before Apple started
putting Tiger in the boxes, so Apple provided a way for you to get Tiger at
minimal cost.

The offer *might* be extended to people who buy a new Mac after the OS X
release date is announced, but I'm pretty sure the release date is the
cutoff.

Thanks for all the responses! I guess I'll buy the MacBook now and
eagerly await Leopard's release.

I think it's more likely that the product will be out in time so that all
developers can be expected to have it installed on their laptops by the time
they arrive at WWDC.

And I also doubt they'd be allowed to speculate in public even if they
did know, under the terms of their NDA.

Unless you mean developers actually working for Apple, I suspect that
they can speculate in public all they want.
