Post subject: Hard Drive upgrade problems on B&W G3
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>misc (more info?)

Hi,

I've had a read of the upgrated article at www.xlr8yourmac.com, but I
still can't quite figure out what the problem is...

I have a B&W G3, which I think appears to be Rev 1. I'm running out of
space on my 27Gb Quantum Fireball Plus Kx, which works fine, so I
thought I'd get a hold of a 120Gb Seagate Barracuda: the experiences
I'd read seemed to indicate this drive tends to be compatible fine
with G3s.

Anyway, I can't seem to get the drive to be seen at all. I've tried it
as the only drive, I've tried it as slave, as master, on the CD-ROM
controller etc. I've tried in OS 10.3.3 and in 9.2, and messed around
with jumpers till I'm blue (and white) in the face. Ultimately,
although the drive itself seems fine, if I boot up the computer while
it is attached, the mac gives me that flashing "?" icon, even when the
original boot disk is still attached.

The only thing I can see from the forums as being left is getting a
PCI IDE controller card, but any further comments or ideas etc. on
what I'm doing wrong would be most welcome.

Thanks,
J

Sanity check: You're plugging in both power and IDE cables, right? Have
you tried a different power cable? Maybe one's bad.

Check the existing drives to make sure they aren't set to "cable select". I
don't know if the G3 even supports it, but since you're using master/slave
for the new drive it's best to make sure the other one is the opposite.

I've had up to 3 HD + 1 DVD working concurrently in my B&W (which is
probably the final rev). No problems except when I put in a 160 GB it would
only format to 120, so I moved it to a Linux system and mounted it using
NFS.
