Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>misc (more info?)

Hi,

I'm looking at getting a new Dual G5, but the memory configs are
baffling me.

* The base model is 512Mb. I assume this is 256Mb for each processor -
am I correct?

* At work I've been using a single processor G4 with 512Mb, which is
OK but starting to feel a bit slow (lots of work with photoshop,
illustrator, flash, etc.). For my new box, I'm assuming that I should
be aiming for 1Gb of RAM. With a Dual Processor box, should I be
aiming for 1Gb total for the box, or 1Gb for each processor?

* In short, I suppose that what I'm asking is "for a Dual Processor
G5, do I order the same total amount of RAM that I would for a single
processor box, or do I need to double the amount?"

Many Thanks!

no, this is not correct. It is just 512MB in 2 modules

The amount of RAM has no connection to the number of processors.

In short: the amount of RAM has nothing to do with the number of
processors.

The Dual G5 can handle up to 8GB of RAM (8 slots available). The RAM
modules have to be placed in equal pairs.
If you want to add 512MB you'll have to go for 2 256MB modules.
If you want to add 1GB you can add 2 512MB modules or 4 256MB modules.

Cheers
Andreas

No. The memory is not split. Each processor can access all 512MB of
the memory.

The number of processors doesn't affect the amount of RAM you need.
