Hello:

I am a newbie to the Mac OSX and downloaded Firefox and installed it. What
was left on the desktop was the dmg file and an icon for FF. When I clicked
on the FF icon the browser started up as expected but I prefer not to have
the FF icon on the desktop so I deleted it. Why does FF not install itself
to the Application folder where all the other programs are listed?
And I assume when I deleted the FF desktop icon I deleted the program/app.?

Where is it?

Because it is not an installer (most OS X apps come not as an installer
but as a standalone app you can put whereever you like). The icon is the
app and you have to drag it to the Applications folder (or whereever you
like).

Yes.

In the trash? Open the trashcan and drag it out. Or open the DMG file
again and drag it from there.
