Now that I have found my iMac has a broken internal modem, I need to
come up with a solution. I have a GlobalVillage Teleport modem; if I
got a USB-serial port adapter would this work (and under OS X)? or
should I maybe get a USB modem?

Thanks for your help,

Paul-

I have a similar problem using my iBook with various Ham Radio and other
electronic equipment that requires an RS-232 serial interface. I found a
Keyspan "Twin Serial Adapter" at the Apple store for $79.00. It claims to
provide two RS-422 serial ports via the Mac's USB port. I haven't tried it
yet, but it looks like a possible solution to the problem. However, the
package claims it does not support AppleTalk, and only mentions OS 8.6. It
suggests checking www.keyspan.com for compatibility details.

Several years ago, someone was selling an adapter that installed in place of
the modem, providing an additional serial port. I don't recall the details,
but even that approach won't work with future Macs. The word is that they will
have internal modems interfaced via USB with the internal RS-232-type serial
bus eliminated.
