Post subject: Excel 2004 Version 11.5.5 (090512) & OS 10.6.1 Crashes

Appropriately chastised (very politely) by Bob Jones let me start by
apologizing for adding my situation to the bottom of a thread.
I have been noticing that Excel crashes (by which I mean exiting the
program and the worksheet being worked on) and taking all the other
active programs down leaving me with a blue screen. Re starting Excel
without anyother programs leads to a repeat performance prettyy much
straight away.
I have not tried to boot Excel with the Shift Key down but I have
tried (as noted in my earlier post) tried safe booting which allows me
to work on Excel temporarily but loses my sound so I'm soon back to
restarting normally when the problems recur.
I have now repaired permissions and got the following messages:
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/
ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAgent" has been modified and will not
be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/
DesktopServicesPriv.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Locum" has been
modified and will not be repaired.
These were changed when I was undergoing extensive Excel assistance
earlier this year when I was on OS10.5.
The move to system 10.6.1 seemed initially to reduce problms with
Excel but in the last two weeks these crashes have been occuring.
I have gone back to your note and here are additional responses.
I do not keep track of crashes and when it is bearable I accept that
sometimes things like this happen. Yesterday I was working on a
spreadsheet which required certain functions. When I pressed on the
function icon I noticed that the dialog box (to enter the data) was
coming up with only the very bottom showing in the window soon after
moving it down to where I could enter the data the program was
crashing. It happened repeatedly last night and got me frustrated
enough to try to fiund whether you had issued an upgrade or Mac had
issued an upgrade. with no upgrades I went to the google groups site.
I launch no helper programs that I am aware of but in looking at the
startup login items I notice the following:
Palm Desktop Background, AirPort Base Stration Agent, Epson Scanner
Monitor, istat menus helper, smcfan control, transport monitor,
finderpop-daemon, dropbox, HPeventhandler (all users).
I have not logged on using a different user but can if you want me to.
I have not launched Excel while holding Shift but can if you want me
to.
I have to admit that this is an intermittant happening so difficult to
do testing for (and I understand) difficult to diagnose.
If it makes a difference I am using a MacMini:

Processor Speed: 2.26 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2

Well that is very sad because I had written a description of a crash I
had about an hour ago (it occured when trying to enter data into an
input box created by the old Macro language with the same go to blue
screen. I restarted and started Excel with the shift key down. I'm
guessing this destroys the preference file as the sheet came up in
pagge layout mode and the formatting palette came up (not my idea of
useful but ...). Annoyingly it also destroyed the connection to my
startup hidden file of wonderfully useful macros that I designed eons
ago making my work somewhat slower until ik realized what had
happened. I carried on working happliy for about an hour when it
crashed again on hitting the return key to enter data.
I'm apprehensive. Does this indicate that it is a MacOS problem not an
excel program because it works with a new set of preferences? BTW I
reran permissions after the two crashes -

OK well I have now done a safe boot and Excel crashed again. This time
again hitting the enter key. Of course now I'm very confused and look
forward to hearing from you. Hope my reportage meets your needs! |

Hi Jim:
OK, your reportage certainly met our needs 
I would also like to see the first 20 lines of the Crash Log you get when
this happens. That will tell us which module is falling over.
The "Blue Screen" crashes on certain particular key combinations are Finder
crashes, and Apple has a fix in the works for that. It is allegedly due out
in the 10.6.2 patch which is currently in beta testing.
How confidential is that sheet? You want to email me an example and I will
have a look for you and see if I can see anything?

I thought I had sent a response but it doesn't seem to have posted. I
am find with posting the crash log but you will need to advise how to
get it.
Thanx for the update on the upcoming 10.6.2 fix which will be very
much appreciated.
I am more than happy to send you the sheet i was working on but I
would prefer not to post it on the web. Is that possible? |
