Post subject: Cross platform PPT video
Archived from groups: microsoft>public>mac>office>powerpoint (more info?)

I have a need to insert video into Powerpoint for remote presentations,
typically on a big screen. The end user will be using a PC, will not be
very tech savvy, and may not always be able to use their own laptop. As
such, the final file(s) needs to be as close to "bullet-proof" as
possible - while maintaining high quality, of course! Wink

I receive the video from a colleague on a PC using Pinnacle. His format
options are:
Cinepack.avi
DV Encoder.avi
Indeo 5.1.avi
Intel Indeo R32.avi
MPEG 1
MPEG 2

I may need to do some editing using iMovie, which only allows me to save
as Quicktime .mov files (or iDVD, which probably doesn't help).
Ultimately, the Powerpoint file will likely be used on a PC, but needs
to also (hopefully) work on a Mac as well.

I would have thought that the Powerpoint end of this process would be
simple, but no. My tests indicate that some formats work on one
platform, but not on another - and that it matters which platform the
files are imported into Powerpoint under (eg: a Cinepack.avi file works
fine on the Mac when inserted under the Mac OS but then doesn't work on
a PC, and vice versa!)

My questions:
- Can anyone recommend a stable file format that will "just work"
cross-platform?
- Any rules of thumb about video settings for this application?
- What are reasonable limitations (given typical modern laptops and
projection systems) WRT to file sizes, etc?

I can always install drivers, etc, in clients machines if necessary, but
what happens when I send a computer-challenged client off to present
who-knows-where (from Vienna to Africa to Minnesota!) and presentations
are run off the host's rig?

Thanks very much for your help!

Here are some pages that discuss a couple of the issues you'll have to deal
with:

Re: codecs and such:
The Myers Multimedia FAQ by Austin Myers (PowerPoint MVP)
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00099.htm

And because PowerPoint *always* links to, never embeds, video:
Links break when I move presentation (and at other times)
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00155.htm

And the old standby catchall for all the other "bumps in the night":
PC to Mac and Back
http://www.rdpslides.com/pptfaq/FAQ00281.htm

Given the need for cross-platform stress-free presentations including video,
you might want to consider something other than PowerPoint; I understand
Director produces standalone files with media embedded; Flash is another
option.

Thank you for your response & links, Steve - they kept me
busy for the last day or so!

Unfortunately, it appears it is simply impossible to insert
any video into a Mac Powerpoint file and then have it work
on a PC.
From:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=KB;en-us;297467

"AVIs and MOVs, although playable on the Macintosh, must be
re-linked on the Windows platform by deleting and
reinserting the video file. This is because the Mac OS and
Windows handle video files differently."

Steve's suggestion to use something other than Powerpoint
is a reasonable one, but is a non-starter in my case as I'm
sending clients to conferences and meetings where this
format is a necessity. No choice in the matter.

I've also done a fair bit of testing and here is my update,
consistent with the above quote:
Using video saved in a variety of formats, here are the
formats that functioned for me when inserted into Powerpoint.
PC (Win98, 2k, XP):
- Cinepak (.avi)
- Indeo 5.1 (.avi)
- Intel Indeo R32 (.avi)

Mac (9.2.2, X):
The three formats above, plus
- DV Encoder (.avi)
- Cinepak (.mov)
- DV Encoder (.mov)
- mpeg1

Under both OS's the Cinepak (avi) and Indeo 5.1 (avi)
appeared to be the best performers.

Files imported under one OS uniformly did not work when
transported to the other OS - in either directions.
- On the PC, a box claiming Quicktime and the Cinepak codec
needed to be installed appears in lieu of each Mac-inserted
video file.
Note that
A) AVI files should not require Quicktime, and
B) the very same file inserted under Windows works fine! In
addition, the files in question run just fine outside of
Powerpoint using MCI.
- On the Mac, most of the PC inserted files appear (the
..mov version do not), but do not run. They remain static
images.

Apparently, the upshot is that if you wish to present a PPT
show with video under Windows, you must insert the video
files under Windows, and the same with the Mac OS.
Fortunately, my trusty old VPC suffices for this purpose,
but this is really not a very satisfying solution.

Does anyone know a way to work on a Mac in iMovie, and
export a file that will work correctly in Powerpoint under
Windows?

Hi

If you have QuickTime Pro you can export any QuickTime in .avi format. Since
iMovie can work with QuickTime that's one way to accomplish this.

If that's because of the way they do paths to linked files, there might be an
out, but otherwise, drat.

Thanks for posting all your research! Would you mind if some of that
eventually finds its way into the PPT FAQ?

Some users had success inserting the QuickTime movie on the Mac side and
seeing it on the Windows side using this unsupported Windows utility. You
still need to make sure the video is in the same folder in the presentation
when you insert it on the Mac and when you run it on the PC.

May require some tweaking of MCI Extensions for the MOV suffix to get it to
work.

iMovie does not include an "Export to PowerPoint" function. You could save
it as a QuickTime movie and run it in QuickTime Player on the Windows side.
