I've got a little LAN set up that has a couple of Macs, an iBook through
airport, and a Windows PC on it. I use a 100Mbps router to connect it all
to my DSL modem. Gigabits switches are now available for about 150USDs, and
I'd like to get one solely to connect the two Macs that support gigabit
speeds, but of course they're also to remain connected to the router to get
out to the internet and to the iBook via Airport so they can all swap
files. (I can hardly wait for terapixel cameras. :->)

Before I spring for the gigabit switch, though, I'd like to make sure I can
get it to work as I want it to. My initial thought is that I'd plug the two
desktop Macs into the switch, then connect the switch to the router. I'm
fairly sure the two Macs would then find the internet and vice versa, but
can someone tell me that is so? Having layers of LANs is confusing me. I'm
thinking I'd have to reconfigure the router to find those two Macs on the
switch.

Yeah, it's those trivially easy jobs that are the killers. Stuff that's
intuitively obvious to the most casual observer.

Bummer. Going from 10 to 100 was a _very_ spritely advance. With image file
sizes increasing exponentially, if not geometrically, it's taking longer
and longer to transfer files between computers.
