Hi Brian;
Since you don't specify your current update levels for Office or OS X that's
the place to start... Make sure that Office is fully updated to 12.2.1 &
that you've applied the 10.6.1 update to OS X. Repair disk permissions after
any updates -- and a restart doesn't hurt

I recall a formatting issue of
a similar nature but it was corrected by one of the Office updates.
I'm not clear on either of the formatting examples you gave, though. If I
format for pounds there is no - between the sign & the value. Even if the
amount is a minus the - appears before the symbol, not after it. I've also
not ever seen the " in Excel number formatting, although the () can be used
to indicate a minus value rather than the dash. Can you be more explicit
with your description of what you've done to apply the formatting (one of
the standard options, a custom format, a Style?)?
Does this happen in all workbooks, all sheets, or just certain ones? What
file format are you saving in? Is this a file you created or did you receive
it from another source?
