I have recently aquired a PowerMac 7200 with very little memory. I know
it uses DIMMS. Is it possible to use PC100 memory in this machine?

Thanks,

Michael

No, I don't think so.

DIMMs for a 7200 must be fast-paged mode DRAM, 64-bit wide, 70ns access
time or less. Apple says the 7200 supports 8, 16, 32, or 64MB DIMMs,
for a maximum of 256MB (4x64), but larger DIMMs might work too.

If you'd like manuals, you can download them from Apple's web site.
Just go to Support -> Manuals and start looking.

No. PC100/PC133/PCwhatever DIMMs aren't compatible with this machine (or
any of the rest of the PowerMac 7x00/8x00/9x00 family)

Use the same RAM that you'd put in any PowerMac 7x00/8x00/9x00 machine -
namely, 168 pin 5 volt FPM with a speed rating of at least 70ns. 60ns
RAM is STRONGLY recommended.

One bit of wisdom I keep hearing all over the place: *DO NOT EVEN TRY*
to put "EDO" DIMMs into a 7200. They'll plug in just fine. But you'll
fry the computer, the DIMMs, or both. Unlike the 7200, the rest of the
"family" is able to use EDO DIMMs, (and the 7500 and 7600, at least, are
able to "mix-n-match" FPM and EDO DIMMs happily) even though they all
ignore the EDO features.

While there's nothing intrinsically *WRONG* with a 7200 (it's a Mac...
How COULD there be anything wrong with it? Smile ), do be aware that it's a
somewhat limited machine that Apple deliberately "crippled" in a few
ways, all intended to keep it from competing against the 7500. The 7200
was intended as an "entry level" machine, while the 7500 was the "pro
level" rig. Apple didn't want the 7200 to divert sales of the
higher-priced (and higher performing, not to mention much more
upgradable) 7500, so they deliberately cut some corners (the most
visible one being the lack of the dedicated processor slot that allows
the rest of the family to switch processors with about the same ease as
you'd change shirts) to make sure that the 7200 remained a "toy"
computer when compared to the "pro" 7500.

I upgraded mine with the Sonnet Crescendo 400MHz G3 upgrade and have
been happy with it. I now have 176MB of RAM I have acquired from various
discarded 7200's. My gain, their loss. I've added USB and a second hard
drive. It's great as an internet computer as long as you don't want to
view all of the latest videos. I haven't missed them.
