Post subject: Still Having problem when installing Fedora core 4
Archived from groups: comp>os>linux>setup (more info?)

Hi,
I'd tried to install Fedora Core 4 as the second os on my machine.
But,
After few seconds when I press Enter button to install Fedora using GUI
mode, some
messages displayed and stucked displaying followings,

[<some details>]--------------
[<some details>]-------------
================================
[<c0103c4a>] Common_interrupt+0x1a/0x20
[< >] mount_block_root+0x8d/0xf0
[< >]---------
..
...
..
I'm using Intel D865 board, intel pentium 4 processor and RAM of 512MB.

I have two 80 GB hard drives, one DVD rom, one cd rw and one DVD rw.

Ive tried to use text mode also, but same messages arose.
I'm wondering whether this is a kernel crash or something else.
If it is a kernel crash, can I correct by setting BIOS?
Pls Help me.

I have no specific solution to your problem. Such things are difficult to
determine long distance with limited information. So, I'll ask questions.

First, what's the first OS on your machine? Does it have any issues with
the hardware?

How did you obtain your FC4 distro? Buy? Download? Etc?

If you downloaded, did you run a checksum to verify there were no
errors?

Was it iso files or other?

Did you download the files from within Windows? Did you use Internet
Explorer for http or ftp download? FYI: Explorer many times
when downloading Linux iso's will change the iso somehow causing a bad
download. Use a dedicated Windows ftp client instead.

Did you burn your own CDs or install right off the hard drive? If you
burned them, did you have your CD burner software verify there were no
errors with the burn?

When you started your install, did you use Fedora's built-in
CD verification? Don't worry, if it indicates errors. For some reason --
I don't know why -- it will sometimes even when there aren't any. If both
your downloaded checksum and burner checksum indicated NO ERRORS, there
probably aren't.

I noted that you have 5 devices -- 2 hds, 2 DVDs, 1 CD. Can't put more
than 4 on 2 IDE controllers. So, is one USB? Or do you have a SCSI card
or an extra IDE card installed?

Are all you devices properly configured -- Master, Slave, etc?

Are your hard drives RAID'd? How are they partitioned? Is there
unpartitioned and/or unformatted space available for Linux already? Or
were you going to do that during the FC4 install?

Have you done a memory check for bad RAM?

Sory for the delay,

I'd participated a FOSS conference in last few days.

So answers for your questions are listed below

1. My first OS is MS windows XP service pack 2 and no issue with
hardware

2. I participating a Linux Administration course these days and the
instructor the one who gave me the 4cd pack. but the thing is those cds
were worked properly in our course lab machines. I tried with another
cd pack and dvd also, but same problem occures.
I've set commands to "not to check harsware when installling" but,...
same.

3. I have no idea how he obtained them but cds are working other
machines.

4. I have those drivers but due to scareness of IDE I connect 2 Hard
drivers and two of the DVD ROM, CD RW or DVD RW @ a time

5. All of them are properly configured.

6. I created 10GB ext3 partition to install FC4 on the Master Hard
drive

7.No unformatted partitions or unpartitioned spaces.

8.No bad RAM

I do not understand this at all

So if you don't mind, please help me Stefan

I'm thinking of Debian, but I'm afraid to go for it untill I figure
this out

Thanks for your Kindness

Some options:

1. Something similar to <http://www.knoppix.org/> just to test things
out. Knoppix is a live-CD distro, meaning that the hard drive is never
touched (nor required). In the event of a problem Knoppix is very
useful, and you can even use it to surf the web Smile It'll be a tad
slow, as it's working off of the cd-rom drive, not the hard drive, and
is a bit of a resources hog I imagine, but it does work. I strongly
recomend starting with knoppix or similar.

2. Don't install with media. For Fedora, just download the relatively
tiny rescue-cd, boot from the rescue cd, type "linux askmethod" and
then enter (this is based on memory, and I'm sure there's something
similar for Debian or what-have-you):

mirrors.kernel.org
/fedora/core/4/i386/os/

3. Once you have Knoppix running it's supposed to be easy to install
Gentoo, although I've never done that.

I strongly recomend a live-CD. I think Gentoo also has a live CD? The
idea here is that if the live-CD works then you can pretty much expect
any linux to install without problem, and most of the distros can be
installed *from* a live-CD.

KNOPPIX (in particular) is NOT meant to be installed on the HDD - ask
Klaus Knopper, the author - or even easier , see their Wiki FAQ at the
knoppix.net forums.

I concur with most of your other recommendations though Wink

K/Ubuntu , Kanotix, MEPIS, Debian are all HDD installable (as well as
many many others), though some distros may have 2 CDs, one for HDD
Install and one for LiveCD.

kaari,

I've just download FC4 and am getting the same error msgs when trying to
install. I too have an Intel D865 board, P4 and 512MB. Only the 1 HD
though (160GB) and 1 DVD drive (Pioneer-109).

If you manage to fix these probs, then please let us know! Likewise i'll
do the same.
