You can find out with:

dd if=/dev/zero of=junk bs=1024k count=8192

This will make a file of 8GB.

(Short answer is yes.)

Yes. There is no problem if you have a 64-bit system. If you have a
32-bit system, your programs need to be LFS-aware. Please see
http://www.suse.de/~aj/linux_lfs.html

(LFS = "large file support")
