XP overwrote the MBR, where grub resides. You need to restore it.
Google for "restore grub" to find a bunch of pointers.

Except that there is no such thing as RedHat 9.1. There was RedHat 9, then
the Fedora Core and the RedHat Enterprise releases.
What operating system did you have, exactly? And do you have a Knoppix or
your installation CD's that you can use to mount the Linux partitions x1€
re-install grub or lilo, the Linux compatible bootloaders? |

If RH was on C you erase it. If it was on a different drive reinstall RH as a
upgrade rather than a new install. Lilo will be restored.

You can try to use a tool like partition magic or something like that
(fdisk for example). Make your Linux root partition active (bootable),
reboot computer, and Linux should boot . You can install LILO or GRUB
from Linux now, so you can boot both systems... |

Linux doesn't care didly squat about active partitions; that's a Windows
thing. Doing as you suggest will not make Linux boot, but will insure that
Windows won't.

Are you sure?
What if you install lilo or grub on a Linux partition.
How does the computer know to look there?

From info grub;
"If you install GRUB into a partition or a drive other than the first one,
you must chain-load GRUB from another boot loader. Refer to the manual for
the boot loader to know how to chain-load GRUB."
One can have a floppy, or CD, with GRUB on it, to chain-load the GRUB on
the partition. I have a floppy with a complete GRUB installation on it. It
can chain-load to another GRUB on a partition, or boot the kernel on the
partition directly, as I wish.
If booting from the hard drive, there must be a boot loader in the MBR. If
that boot loader is a Windows loader, it will look for an active
partition, which can only be a primary partition, and must have a Windows
loading program in it. With enough fooling around, ntldr can be made to
chain-load GRUB. If the boot loader is lilo, GRUB, or another third party
boot loader, it can/will chain-load to the GRUB in the partition. However,
if the MBR boot loader is lilo, or GRUB it can directly boot linux,
without chain-loading, making GRUB on the partition unnecessary.
I personally like to keep things simple, and have GRUB in the MBR of hda,
which contains Linux. If I want to boot a Windows installation, I have it
on a separate drive, on hde, or hdg, to avoid problems like the OP is
experiencing.
