I'm running FC5 and trying to set up CUPS for an HP DeskJet 812C. I
have two problems.

1) Printing from the FC5 machine works fine. But I can't connect to
port 631 from other machines on my network, not even via telnet. There
is no firewall in place, (iptables INPUT, FORWARD, OUTPUT policies are
all ACCEPT).

2) Printing locally, the test page printed normally before I started
working on problem #1. In the course of my experimentation, I deleted
and then added the printer. The test page still prints, but the color
wheel is now coarse, with noticeable dots. CUPS color settings are
currently CMYK, 300 dpi, and I've tried 600 dpi.

Anyone know how to fix these problems?

Did you enable CUPS printer sharing???

http://127.0.0.1:631 Choose: Manage Server option

Re-install the printer in CUPS, may use the PPD file here;

Also, you may need to edit /etc/cups/cupsd.conf to add something like

# Restrict access to the server...
<Location />
Order allow,deny
Allow from 192.168.2.4
Allow @IF(eth2)
</Location>

I see links for managing jobs, printers, and printer classes, but
not servers. Can you describe the required changes to cupsd.conf?

Try this page: http://127.0.0.1:631/admin

Also see: http://www.cups.org/documentation.php

Timothy Murphy also provides some useful information.
