"Just worked".

I said that you had to know your machine.

Who is lying? You are.

Where's the reference where I said there were "no problems"?

I installed it because I knew my machine. You had to know your machine then.
Now you really don't have to.

Nah, I keep niggling him about how much trouble he had installing ubuntu. He
obviously got a bit upset.

You don't get to decide what "we" are talking about.

I don't have a living granny, but I'm of an age to be a grandfather. Too bad
you can't even get Ubuntu working properly without lots of whining.

More whining about video and sound. Get over it or go back to something more

Rubbish. Lighten up, Quark. What a dour whining creature you've become.

If I'm going to acknowledge anyone it would be Linus Torvalds and Daniel
Robbins. I don't have anything to do with ubuntu.

It sure was rampant in the Atari club!

And a lot of guys just wanted a copy just so they could say they had a
massive collection of software -- most of which went unused, AFAIK.

So are you claiming that Windows 95/98 never had any problems with modem
drivers?

I remember several mind-numbingly stupid issues, where e.g. modem
activity would lock up and/or BSOD Win9x, networking went up and down
like a yo-yo, and every time you restarted the machine you ended up with
"Modem #3", "Modem #4" ad infinitum in the control panel - modems
section, because of Windows' brain-dead hardware enumeration (which it
still suffers from even today, ref: the USB stack and others).

And was this just one problematic machine? Hardly - it's pretty much
every Windows machine I remember dealing with during that era.

So clearly, by your logic, Windows 9x was not ready for the Desktop 10
years ago.

My opinion is that you're an idiot.

The Trolls like Straw Man arguments. They conveniently forget what a dog
Windows is with drivers, but rabidly jump all over any given Linux
problem like it's Armageddon. Just take a look in the Vista groups and
forums, and see how "ready for the Desktop" *Vista* is. LOL! Talk about
Armageddon!

I never said it. Quark made it up, as he usually does. What I actually said
was that I had no trouble installing Redhat 5.0 and onwards. All you needed
was to know your machine really well, ie video card, monitor, etc....

Quark then misquoted me... how unusual!
