Post subject: Bug#418214: xvnc4viewer: man page does not explain the encoding mechanisms
Archived from groups: linux>debian>bugs>dist (more info?)

Package: xvnc4viewer
Version: 4.1.1+X4.3.0-21
Severity: normal

The manual page of xvnc4viewer, obtained by doing

man xvnc4viewer

just mentions that the current vncviewer supports 3 encoding mechanisms -
"ZRLE", "hextile" or "raw". But it does not explain what those encodings
are and when to actually use them. I was very confused when I read the
manual page as to what they actually are. Even the upstream's website
( www.realvnc.com ) does not explain what they are. It would be nice to
briefly explain about these encoding mechanisms and tell the users that
"ZRLE" is good for dial up connections, "raw" is good for high speed LANs
etc.,

If necessary, you can also borrow information from tightvnc's website (
http://www.tightvnc.com/vncviewer.1.html , ENCODINGS section ).

Hi Kamaraju

I know that this is a problem. However I do not have a good source of
information. The tight encoding is not the same as the vnc4 codings.

If you can point me to a good location, where this is described I'll be
very happy.

Regards,

The book "Linux Server Hacks Volume Two" by Bill Von Hagen, Brian K.
Jones describes various encoding schemes in pg-53 hack #10 "Access
Systems Remotely with VNC". The book does not distinguish between
tightvnc and realvnc when they describe what each encodings does.

So I am assuming that there is no difference between tightvnc and
realvnc when it comes to "what each encoding does". However, I could
be totally wrong as well.

According to the book, the encodings supported by TightVNC are

CopyRect
CoRRE
Hextile
Raw
RRE
Tight
Zlib

RealVNC supports only 3 (as explained in the man page)
Hextile
Raw
ZRLE

So they both have two encodings in common.

I do not know if I can copy paste the explanations given for each
encoding as it might violate some copyright laws. But the information
is there if needed.

thanks

This must be the latest version of tightvnc, or is it the version
in Debian as well. I must admit that I have not checked it that well.

That is what I know as well.

It depends on the copyright of the book. I do unfortunatly not know
that.

However if it is rephrased enough it should be possible to
include.

But maybe it is easier to contact the tightvnc upstream author
to ask him to describe it better in the manpage. Smile
