Post subject: Bug#404534: libnss-mdns: mdns breaks my local used .local domain, it should check if that domain is used already
Archived from groups: linux>debian>bugs>dist (more info?)

Package: libnss-mdns
Version: 0.8-6.1
Severity: important

resolving does not work anymore, internally and externally. I think this comes due to my local .local domain. If I
edit /etc/nsswitch.conf and just delete the mdns stuff, all works as it should. I had this issue once, altered
nsswitch.conf and all was ok since then. Today there was an upgrade and as it seems it just deleted my settings in
nsswitch.conf (seen that as resolved in another bugreport... strange) so another missbehavior.

greetings
Michael

While it is not recommended to use nss-mdns on a network with a .local
TLD, it should disable itself automatically. However, I just noticed I
broke the Depends: of libnss-mdns in my NMU: could you please install
avahi-daemon 0.6.16-1 and see whether this fixes your problem?

Thanks,

I am quite sure avahi and the whole mdns foo formerly were depends of
the gnome desktop, that's why I got them installed. As I noticed this
misbehavior the first time (resolving does not work partially or
completely after avahi / mdns foo was installed due to gnome install on
my local .local domain) and tried to remove avahi, it was about to
remove gnome as well. Very interesting for me, if I try to remove it
now, gnome would not be removed as well. As I have no real use of avahi
this is probably the best way for me to solve the bug, remove it and it
is done Smile but I will test your suggestion tomorrow nevertheless and
keep you informed. I had a tough morning, day, evening, night and I am
about to fall asleep right here at my desk... so see you tomorrow!

thanks
Michael
