Had this problem last year with Sarge, used the fglrx driver instead.
Have just done a fresh install of Etch and used the xserver-xorg ati
driver. After 10 to 15 minutes it locks up, keyboard is dead.

ATI Radeon 9200 PRO, PCI card

Try this (after appropriate `apt-get install`s):

#v+ sh +
radeontool dac off # optional
rovclock -c 81 -m 81
#v-

As of my first update of Sarge at the same time of original BR, my
laptop's VGA fan got crazy. After some time of backporting and other
fsky things that's what i've come up with.

As far as i can tell such problems are hardware ones, and hardware gets
crazy under high temperature. I was crazy after my fan, thus i didn't
get any hangs, but maybe your laptops just have no such servo fan at
all. Whilst i don't use X as i used to, seldom readings of PDFs and
DJViews are OK with that settings.

Don't know about 3D stuff, but way X guys use it on plain 2D desktop is
just stupid. In case 3D stuff under Windows runs OK, then maybe other
hardware-software semi-problems, like ACPI contols for term. are in
there...

Apart from Oleg's reply, it would be good to test with xserver-xorg-core
1.3 (currently in testing) and xserver-xorg-video-ati 6.6.192 (currently
in experimental).

Thanks,
Brice

Ping?
There's now 6.6.193 in unstable and 6.7.196 in experimental. Please try
one of these (preferably the latter) and report back whether the bug
still occurs.

Thanks,
Brice
