I recently built a new PC which uses a MSI PCIe NX8400GS (nvidia) video
card. I chose this video card based on positive reviews posted by other
linux users. I'm running slackware 12.2 (with all patches), kernel
2.6.27.21, xorg-server-1.4.2, and icewm 1.2.36. My /etc/rc.d/rc.font
script contains "setfont -v alt-8x8.gz". I used the scripts at
slackbuilds.org scripts to build the nvidia kernel module and driver.
My older PCs, mostly use matrox agp video cards, run the identical
software (except for X video card driver and kernel video module) and
have been trouble free for years with numerous releases of slackware,
linux, and X.
Issue:
When I exit X or switch to a VT, the VT font appears to change (larger
font and extra new lines). I've tried the vesa, nv, and nvidia 180.51 X
drivers. The results appear to be the same. I didn't get any errors in
my Xorg.0.log file with either driver, but I did get a few warnings with
the vesa driver. I did use the nvidia-switch script and updated my
xorg.conf when switching between X drivers. A google search appears to
indicate that vt switching problems are common with nvidia cards/drivers.
Workaround:
My workaround was to call /etc/rc.d/rc.font at the end of my startx
script. This works fine when exiting X, but I must manually execute
this script when switching to a VT while X is running.
I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has a better workaround or
knows of a real fix to this apparent nvidia/X issue.
Thank you,
Peter
