I want to add an action to the system so that every time a user clicks
in a link with for example

"myprogram://show-mydata"

in a browser it passes some data to my application. How is this best
done? Is this a browser specific thing or do we have a desktop (KDE/
GNOME) wide way to do it?

Thanks, in the meantime i found this link for windows

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa767914.aspx

and i wonder how firefox might implement it. It's such a pitty that
the Portland project does not make some progress. Desktop Linux is
missing so much good features.

Okay i found something, looks like i need a KProtocolInfo an write
some IO-slave.
Seems to became very complex. And haven't found something for GNOME
yet.

What are the recommended lists for KDE/GNOME programming?

Another suggestion would be that not many people bother to reply to
stupid questions which cannot be answered.

Well the question was answered in a Windows group within 20 min und
about 1 hour in a MacOSX group.

So what does this tell us about the Linux community? And it's not the
first question that ended in such a way, everytime when somethink is
difficult nobody can answer because the whole Linux community is just
a shitload of "Wichtigtuer" and Geeks.

Still miles away from a winning desktop.
