Post subject: (more about) portage issues and simple/basic hacks/ideas about how to
Archived from groups: alt>os>linux>gentoo, others (more info?)

Hi *,
~
I have been using different Linux and BSD distros without settling
for any in particular. As it always happens with any other thing
anyway in life you find things you like in one that you don't have in
the other
~
I like the gentoo way, except for their BSD-like portage system's
attempt to keep everything on the bleeding edge, which seems to me to
be quite a bit stupidly risky. I am thinking here mostly about running
servers
~
Almost everything else about the portage system I like (even though
reverse dependency checks and all this good stuff would be great to
have)
~
I have been fancying about a portage-system-like package management
utility that would let me:
~
1) choose the most Linux stable kernel
~
2) choose the most stable applications' versions that would dance
well after 1)'s music
~
3) check all "most stable" dependencies
~
4) let me compile "a-la portage" my custom system (verifying and
keeping the sources ...)
~
I think this is doable. To me it is just a case of bridging cultures.
You could for example cheat/use the list of packages and dependencies
of the most stable debian release
~
I love gentoo (specially the hardened gentoo project) and I
understand gentoo does things this way by its very design. Nonetheless
I have also heard endless complaints from gentoo users about portage
~
I think most probably there exists something like what I have in mind
and/or there are other people that have been thinking about the same
thing
~
Any clarifications, leads, ideas or comments on it?
~
In which other way do you think can portage be improved? Especially
for server, HA setups
~
Thanks

Doesn't using ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="<arch>" instead of "~<arch>" do what you're
looking for?

I did read the article and comments to it and I think there is some
truth to both sides
~
I have so far found gento livecds much more difficult to work with
than knoppix. Problems detecting video cards, missing cheat codes you
got so used to with knoppix (like bootfrom="/dev/sd<>/<path to
image>.iso"), ...
~
If I am right, I don't quite get why such a cheat code like bootfrom
is missing as an option, which is very helful when you only have one
CD bay. I guess I am just adjusting to gentoo

Have you seen the article "Why Gentoo Should Not Be On Your Server" by
Alexander Ljungberg?

http://markhobley.yi.org/gentoo/documents/notonserver/

Maybe use Debian based servers and Gentoo based desktops.

Alternatively, a solution might be to have a local repository of stable
source packages, and update it manually as required. The machines are
configured to point at the local repository, rather than the rapidly moving
live sources.

I like the stability of Debian on my servers, by some of my Debian desktop
packages urgently need an update. Debian backports is not always up to date.

I like the idea of a cutting edge Gentoo based desktop system, and I want the
ability to build the entire system from source, because I want to make some
code changes.

Regards,

Mark.

He's a weeny. He makes his own problems then claims there's no stable
version of Gentoo.

In my humble opinion, he lacks credibility and to anyone that knows
Gentoo... he's quite laughable.

Gentoo makes an excellent server by any measure. It's the caliber of the
admin that one should worry about. In Alexander's case, he's no admin of
any merit to write what he did.

I am having a hard time making gentoo use the same monitors that work
just fine with knoppix, could you please, point me to these additional
"kernel options"'s documentation

Gentoo has it's own additional "kernel options", which really is just
forwarded to the main init script.

use tftp and you don't need to use the CD at all.
