Does someone know if it is possible to post to linux.user... groups with
a news reader?
It seems that they post only via webforum interface, but the threads can
read here on my news server.

If you mean groups like the one we are in now then it is possible (and I
think preferable).

You could try a newsreader such as Pan , Sylpheed, Xpn etc.

no I had in mind the debian user group like linux.debian.user etc.

I tried to post there, but the postings seem not to arrive there.

I'm not sure about linux.debian.user, but debian uses a lot of mailing
lists. That might be the problem.

Linux.debian.user is a newsgroup just like this one so a news reader
should work well. Which ones have you tried?

This works for me.

tried with Forte Agent and Thunderbird, both negative

According to Howard, one has to subscribe to some mailing list, but
will have to find out what this means and how should one then log in
or so, since news reader do not offer other login then maximum to the
actual news server.

Linux.debian.user is gatewayed from the debian-user mailing list.
Once you are subscribed to linux-gate mailing list, your newsgroup
posts will go to debian-user and then appear in the newsgroup.

You don't have to do anything special with your newsreader.

However, the email address used for the From: line on Usenet will need
to be the same as the email address used to register with the mailing
list, which in turn will need to be a valid address that belongs to
the subscriber.

As you can see by the headers I am using pan. The linux.debian groups
appear as normal news groups - btopenworld/btinternet show about 130,000
groups in total (I cannot remember who supplies their connection but it
is good).

Look at the headers in linux.debian.user. All the posts go through
the mail-to-news gateway at news.nic.it. Check the Path:. For
example, here's mine posted to the newsgroup using slrn.

On Thu, 20 Aug 2009, in the Usenet newsgroup alt.os.linux.debian, in article

Below - as for subscribing, look IN the headers of posts that originated
on the mailing list.

>As you can see by the headers I am using pan. The linux.debian groups
>appear as normal news groups

If you look at the control message that is posted to the newsgroups
linux.admin.news and news.admin.hierarchies when the admin
(linux-admin@bofh.it) happens to think of it (fairly rare), you would
find things like

-----------
linux.debian.laptop debian-laptop DeleteThis @lists.debian.org (Moderated)
linux.debian.legal debian-legal DeleteThis @lists.debian.org (Moderated)
linux.debian.maint.boot debian-boot DeleteThis @lists.debian.org (Moderated)
linux.debian.maint.dpkg debian-dpkg DeleteThis @lists.debian.org (Moderated)
-----------

and so on - 110 groups. These are not Big Eight (comp.*, humanities.*,
misc.*, news.*, rec.*, sci.*, soc.*, and talk.*) newsgroups, so there
is quite a bit of anarchy - the server I'm posting through has 326
groups in the 'linux.*' hierarchy.

Most of these linux.* groups started out as mailing lists, and the
news groups were ONE WAY MIRRORS (read-only) of the mailing lists.
You can post to these groups on _some_ servers, but those that
honor the 'moderated' flag will drop/refuse such posts. If your
news server is set to honor the flag, the posts would be forwarded
to a moderator for approval (which may or may not work). The other
solution is to join the mailing list itself.

>btopenworld/btinternet show about 130,000 groups in total (I cannot
>remember who supplies their connection but it is good).

By the headers in your post, that looks like giganews.com - the DCMA,
X-Usenet-Provider and Path headers suggest that. They are a bit spotty
about honoring and not honoring the 'moderated' flag.
