Post subject: New kernel necessary for MIDI support?
Archived from groups: alt>os>linux>debian (more info?)

Hi all,

just an easy question, because I used Mandrake / Mandriva during the past
years exclusively, ans so I'm new to debian:

I have several MIDI devices, formerly used with windows, and I'd like to
keep them and access them by one of my linux boxes.

Unfortunately Mandriva seems to have no MIDI support available and it
seems to be very hard to get all libraries to build a customized kernel
supporting MIDI, I consider to switch to a different distibution.

I heard from some kollegues that there was a "Multimedia kernel" out
there, which already provides support for "musical instruments' digital
interface" from scratch.

To be more precise: I do not mean those lame "sound font techiques" which
just "map" MIDI events to audio samples. By that I mean real access to
the MIDI hardware device, to be able to control external synthesiers etc.

Does such thing exist in the debian distribution?

Thanks,
best regards,

Markus

Use the Synaptic Package Manager and search on "midi" (no quotes) or in
a terminal enter:

apt-cache search midi

On 2009-07-25, the following emerged from the brain of Markus R. Keßler:

With alsa you can just use MPU-401 if your PC is equipped with a
so-called 'game port'. Just get yourself a game port to midi cable.

Some USB devices might work too. Google for it.
