Archived from groups: alt>os>linux>gentoo (more info?)

wish to install gentoo in a 2G CF on a 17 cm VIA motherboard but very rusty
in linux

after search a while I come up with a few questions
1. is gentoo installing in cf the easiest linux installion of all the linux?
what about nanobsd?

2. I have read through the http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-327295.html
I am wondering I am using the LIVE CD, I do not know how to begin with...
need someone with patient to guild me ...please!
3. the common PCI riser ( 1 to 3 PCI slot) does not work proper I replace a
3k3 resister and the bebug sometimes run with 47, 00 or FF, that means cpu
is not running , why?

I may rise other problems.

TIA.

What type of CF do you have? is it connected to a card reader or connected on
the ide connector?

There are a few usb-memory (fingers) distros, maybe the "best" one is
www.pendrivelinux.com

nanobsd ain't Linux.

You should have looked at the wiki instead,
http://gentoo-wiki.com/HOWTO_Small_Footprint_Gentoo_on_USB

In this case it should be done in the same manner as a normal install of
Gentoo, but it can be good to skip logging, disable cron jobs and no swap, so
that you won't have too much write/reads.

I would suggest the Universal install CD, you can find that one at
http://www.gentoo.org/main/en/where.xml

and then follow the instructions in the handbook
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-x86.xml

If you have another architecture than the classic x86, then pick the right
manual from http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/index.xml

If you have a PowerPC, seems like the Gentoo guys got lasy and removed quite
many architectures.

http://www.heber.co.uk/pdfdownloads/embedded_linux_tips/flash_booting.html

I followed the above command and tried, the command broke my CD_CROM because
the cd-rom drive have very strange laud noise ( look at it is broken when it
has never been dropped onto the ground ) I do not know.

"To make the changes permanent use the w command:

Command (m for help): w
The partition table has been altered!
Calling ioctl() to re-read partition table.

Warning: If you have created or modified any DOS 6.x partitions, please see
the
fdisk manual page for additional information.
Syncing Disks"

in the writing syncing disk , it has a error , I formatted the compact flash
in windows XP as fat partition with a single file in the file and tried a
couple times. I let the cd-rom lay around for two days hoping to drain the
voltage inside the cd-rom and this morning I started again to read the
gentoo img from cd-rom and load the linux into memory and at the same time I
discovery this http://www.flutterby.com/ which very similar to the UK web
site instructing how to make a CF boot.

I need a million help from the smartest people that can help me!
..
