Hello,

Just wanted to post about my recent try with SW... I used to use it a
long while back (v2.0 or maybe prior), and always liked it a lot. Then I
got lazy and started using a Linksys router. Recently that died, and I
said to myself, why not use SW again. So, I downloaded and installed it,
and all went well until trying to connect to the internet. There is
something wrong with the init scripts for the RED interface when using
DHCP from a cable modem. The eth1 (red) NIC does not get assigned an IP
and it just doesn't work.

Before anyone starts screaming "n00b!", I'm not a n00b, and I know the box
and the NICs are working properly. To prove it, I downloaded and
installed the latest IPCop, and it comes right up, with no changes to the
hardware/cables/etc.

Not sure what's wrong, but it's badly broken here. Happily using IPCop
and hope somebody fixes it.

Had the same problem. Was able to bring up my red nic manually, then
engage dhcp with my cable modem manually. Works great!

Interesting. I tried that too, and got the red NIC up manually, ran
"dhcpcd eth1" on it, and it appeared to get an IP address from the cable
modem. However, I could not access the internet from the GREEN side LAN,
probably something wrong with the route table. I suppose I could have
fiddled with it and gotten it working, but didn't have the time to spare
at the moment. I'm wondering if it had anything to do with the fact that
both of the NICs in the machine were identical (3Com 3x905's or similar),
and the startup scripts got confused by having the same driver used twice.
I'm sure lots of folks have a similar setup though, so I don't know. I
might give it another look when I have some time, but for now IPCop is
working nicely. Thanks for the reply.

I don't think that is an issue. I have 4 nic's in my smoothie. 2 are
3Com "Corkscrew" drivers, and 2 are Netgear "Tulip" drivers. No issues
to report with my setup (other than having to really pay attention to
the card assignments during setup).

Your welcome. I like IPCop too!

I do think smoothwall should figure out this problem. Having the red
nic not handle dhcp out of the box is probably going to be a huge
turnoff for most people. Honestly, I was about 1 - 2 minutes away from
aborting smoothwall, but I got lucky & it started to work. Otherwise, I
would be sitting here with an IPCop box as well.

Still on 2.0 and works great. Was a little hesitant to try 3.0 because
of that. Thank goodness I kept a clean copy of 2.0, because I don't
see it avail anymore on their site.
