Here's what I did:

localhost / # emerge -pv postgresql

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild N ] dev-python/egenix-mx-base-2.0.5 571
kB
[ebuild N ] dev-db/postgresql-7.4.2-r1 -doc -java
+libg++ +nls +pam +perl -pg-hier -pg-intdatetime
-pg-vacuumdelay +python +readline +ssl -tcltk +zlib
9,015 kB

Here's what mysql (already emerged) looks like:

localhost / # emerge -pv mysql

These are the packages that I would merge, in order:

Calculating dependencies ...done!
[ebuild R ] dev-db/mysql-4.0.18-r2 +berkdb -debug
-innodb +perl +readline +ssl -static +tcpd 0 kB

What's with all the extra postgresql stuff?

- Grant

here's what's causing it. you've got python in your USE list (whether by
default or explicitly it doesn't really matter). whatever part of
postgres uses python requires that extra package to be installed (on
non-mips platforms, if i'm reading the ebuild correctly)

mysql on the other hand doesn't care about anything python..

Ok, the server was set up for me to a certain point so
there could have been some pythoning going on.
