Hi,
I am using sendmail, but 'emerge -pvD world' wants to install ssmtp.
If I add mail-mta/ssmtp to /etc/portage/package.mask. 'emerge -pvD
world' shows:
These are the packages that I would merge, in order:
Calculating world dependencies
*** Package in world file is not installed: app-cdr/k3b

What is the connection between at and ssmtp? If I delele at (emerge -C
at), 'emerge -pvD world' shows:

What is the connection between apsfilter and ssmtp?
Any hints appreciated

Sendmail was installed via emerge, I did reinstallation, it helps,
'emerge -pvD world' does not more demand ssmtp. Thanx. I do not really
understand neither why apsfilter depends on virtual/mta nor what is
virtual/mta. Or with other words, I don't know, how the dependency
checking in gentoo generally works. Do you know, where I can read about
this?

If I installed Sendmail from source is there anyway around this problem
of ssmtp wanting to get installed? I do not want to install Sendmail
from emerge. I prefer the method I used to install it. But, I don't
want to do an emerge -i ssmtp each time a newer version comes out.
Thanks,
Jeff

I think you should inject sendmail, not ssmtp, since this is sendmail
you installed by hand.
And you may mask any version of it that is newer than yours, so you
won't be bothered by new versions entering portage.
But then you will have a dependency problem if you later emerge
something that require a newer sendmail than the one you injected. In
that case, you'll have to install the newer sendmail by hand (but that's
ok, this is what you want) and re-inject it before emerging the
dependent package.

does `emerge -i --oneshot ssmtp` works? (I've never tried)

I did not installed sendmail by hand, I installed it by emerge. But then
I installed linux26-headers and did something like 'emerge -evD system'.
Apparently during the execution of the last command, the information of
installed sendmail disappeared. Simply reinstallation of sendmail solved
my problem.

Okay, that sounds logical, I will give it a try. But, I really think I
already injected Sendmail, but with my memory, I could very well be
wrong. Is there anyway I can see if I injected Sendmail? Where is this
World file? Can I view it?

I have never tried that option. I will read up on it and give it a try.
I will let you know what happens.

I never injected any package myself, but i *think* you should get a
sendmail entry in /var/cache/edb/world and in /var/cache/edb/virtuals,
like 'mail-mta/sendmail' in the former, and 'virtual/mta
mail-mta/sendmail' in the latter. Maybe someone could confirm this as i
may be all wrong.
Anyway, mail-mta/ssmtp is the default provider for virtual/mta, so i am
quite sure you do not have an adequate sendmail entry in the virtuals file.
I hope this helps.

Okay. I do not have an entry for sendmail in my world file, or in my
virtuals file. So, I must not have injected Sendmail. But, when I do
an emerge -i mail-mta/sendmail-8.12.11, I get the following error:
apple edb # emerge -i mail-mta/sendmail-8.12.11
!!! BAD COUNTER in 'mail-mta/sendmail-8.12.11'
>>> Injected mail-mta/sendmail-8.12.11.
Any ideas?

So now it should be injected. If portage still want to install ssmtp,
well... i don't know... if i were you i would try to add the relevant
sendmail entry in the virtuals file by hand, just to see what happen.

But, in my case, it does not appear to be injected. I have looked into
both the world and virtuals file, and there is no Sendmail entry. That
is after I received that "BAD COUNTER" error message.

Okay, I went ahead and put the virtual/mta mail-mta/sendmail line in my
virtuals file and if took care of the problem. I can't believe it was
that easy.
Is there a way for me to find out all of these virtual/????? programs
out there? I have a couple of programs which I compile myself instead
of through emerge.
Thanks for your help.
