I'd like to ask that we keep gmail invite off this list, not only is it
off topic, but I find it highly irritating, and I doubt I'm alone.

I'm not irritated at all, don't care one way or the other. OTOH, I am
probably alone in being irritated by those who hide behind
pseudo-names on the list.

Really?
I've always wondered why it is that people DON'T do this!
I know that my hiding behind a "nick" isn't anywhere near full-proof
security but it helps a LOT when it comes to me keeping my identity
protected from spam, snail junk mail, telemarketing phone calls and
much much worse.
I love the Internet, but I plain just do not trust it.

Gmail invites show up all over the place these days. I can't think of
any of my friends that DON'T have gmail accounts.

Even my ex-fiancee has one!

I'm Gmail-less and staying that way. Razz

Nothing wrong with gmail. It's the mutt of web-interface e-mail. For
what it is, it's not bad at all.

We do? I guess I just don't read enough of the messages on this list
to know that.

It seems that Google wants everyone and their dog to have a gmail
account before it actually goes live. Maybe it'll be in beta forever.

not bad at all indeed, I think maybe a few bugs to work out but
nontheless quite useable.

<Off-Topic>... Oh.. Wait...

Speaking of GMail and invites I have 4 more now so lemme know if you want one.

My name is Brandon Wood and I'm a GMail user.

There, I guess that covers everything...

I was wondering how one accumulates invites. I've been using gmail
for a little while now and I've only had one, and I don't know why it
showed up.

fire-eyes posted <1093739413.21296.8.camel@localhost>, excerpted below,
on Sat, 28 Aug 2004 20:30:13 -0400:

> I'd like to ask that we keep gmail invite off this list, not only is it

If you don't like it, it's generally fairly easy to filter on subject.

Many find it quite useful for their list mail (including this list), given
the gig of storage, even if they don't like the idea of the automated
scans on their private mail (as I don't). I'd be tempted to use it for
lists if I wasn't already using gmane's list2news so I could handle it in
my news client rather than my mail client.

Given that it IS useful for list mail, including THIS list, I'd say
invites are arguably marginally on topic, so I don't see a problem with
it. As I said, it's not difficult to keyword filter on gmail and GMail
and Gmail, with most mail or news clients, and then they won't bother you.
Since the word is likely to be in the subject, decent mail or news clients
should even be able to filter it before download, deleting the overview
from the list on news clients reading the list, and deleting the entire
message from the mail server even before it gets to the mail client. For
those running their own mail servers, filtering there shouldn't be an
issue either.

Thus, I don't see a problem, even tho I'm not likely to have a use for it
myself. As long as it doesn't become multiple threads per day on the
subject, and people keep it to a single thread, I don't see an issue with
it at all.

Unfortunately, not helpful for those who subscribe to the Digest version
of the mailinglist...

unless the OP is interested in running text filters on the body text of
the messages. I suppose it's _possible_ Wink

It is sounding as if you may actually like a gmail account. No need
to get digests and you could view mail in "thread like" views, not
unlike a the mutt client.
