I have seen this topic and have to say that I often use the emerge -u
system.

I tend to stay away from the world command - is this a good thing or bad
?

It depends. When you update system, you pick only programs that are in
the core system configuration. Other application programs on your system
will be ignored and not updated. If you want to keep running old
programs, that's your choice, but you will miss out on any security,
bug, and usability fixes for a lot of applications.

I would recommend that you at least issue 'emerge -pu world' to see what
you are missing. Then you can make a more logical decision.

HTH,
