Post subject: external hard drive, what filesystem to use?
Archived from groups: alt>os>linux>debian (more info?)

Greetings!
I've got an 120 gig external hard drive that I plan on using for my MP3
collection. What filesystem would be best to use?
Orginally I had it formatted with vfat, but hey, no easy way to defrag it
under Ubuntu. I still need to access it with WinXP via my local network.
Thanks for any useful advice or links.

When you go into court, you are putting yourself in the hands of 12 people
who is not smart to enough to get out of jury duty.

NTFS. Format it in Windows XP and use ntfs-3g in Linux to mount it.
Works like a charm here. To get reliable automounting/hotplugging in
Linux, make sure you disable the in-kernel NTFS driver.

Same problem as using vfat, no way to defrag under WinXP....
Just in case I wasn't clear, this external drive will be hooked up to my
Ubuntu laptop...

Oops, make that no way to defrag under Ubuntu......

Since FAT and NTFS is all Windows XP supports, you don't have any
options here. You can defrag it in XP then. Btw, since this is just
for storing your MP3s, you don't even need to defrag it really. And if
you feel like you do need to defrag it, simply move all its files to
another disk and then back. This will defrag it.

It's spelled "you're" and no, I'm not kidding and there's no camera.
I'm in no mood explaining what fragmentation is and why deleting all
files in a filesystem and copying them back effectively defragments it
since the files are put back sequentially, one after another, in whole,
and not in fragments. Google it.

FWIW - I believe there is an ext filesystem driver for MS.

First set up you 120 gig with the gnu/linux filesystem you prefer. ext2,
ext3, reiserfs, etc. Then use samba to share.

Actually, I'm with jellybean - if you meant to access via the network,
then it does not matter what you use. In addition to samba, I believe
that MS also has a 'unix tools' package available for download, so you
could also use NFS.
