Post subject: desktop effects on PowerPC
Archived from groups: linux>debian>maint>kde (more info?)

Hi there

I got a problem here with desktop effects on 4.3.1 on a Powerbook g4 (powerbook
5,4 / ATI Technologies Inc RV350 Mobility Radeon 9600 M10).

If I activate desktop effects the x-server crashes without a possibility to
recover, because I cant change to tty (via alt ctrl f1), no reaction from
keyboard.
Thee is an striped artifact instead of the mouse-pointer icon, thats the only
symptom, I can tell of. No log entries in xorg.log nor messages or syslog...

Same problem with kde 4.2.2. No effects since 4.1.

Compiz is working. So compositing is working fine, I guess.
But I cant set compositing to active in system settings -> desktop.

fyi: Im using radeon-driver, because there is no fglrx for PowerPC.
xserver-xorg = 7.3+20
xserver-xorg-core = 1.4.2-11

Is it possible to get effects to work with radeon driver?

Anybody got desktop effects working on a powerbook g4??

I can provide any further info if needed & possible.

I avoided to reply because I thought that you could get a better opinion since
you asked exactly for a reply from a Mac G4 owner. I had a similar video card on
a PC laptop (ati 9000M) and I'm pretty sure that it worked well with the open
source driver and compiz, but it was not capable to run the KDE4 effects at all
(it was KDE4.0 and it was painful almost for everybody). That laptop of mine now
is dead and if you can cope with general suggestions, you can send here your
xorg.conf, but I'm not sure your problem is related to KDE4 and that I can help
you to solve it. Bye

I bought a new tower just about a month ago. with onboard ATI Radeon
HD 3300 graphics, and if I had had any idea how bad the fglrx drivers
were I never would have bought it. Even scrolling in Konqueror is
jerky, for crying out loud.

Sorry, DRZ, like Valerio I was kind of hoping someone else would know
better too.

You can configure the console layout using systemsettings and choosing
region/language, it should be enough.

Synaptics is not needed anymore.

Use evdev and get rid of this too.

You can use a special .fdi file for hal for tapping and scrolling, google for
it.

Try to put more options here. I suggest to play with AGPMode, AGPFastWrite and
EnablePageFlip. Dri is superfluos since it's automatically enabled.
XaaNoOffscreen seems in contraddiction with AccelMethod EXA. XAA or EXA? I'm
quikly reading the radeon manual so maybe I'm wrong.

This stanza is superfluos too IMHO, xorg is able to autoconfigure itself
properly.
Try removing all the xorg.conf (store a backup just in case) and start from 0 a
new config.
Bye

I know, ahem, I forgot to tell, its the product of a few configuration tryouts,
before finding other solutions... Wink
What I dont really understand is, how can I find out, what is configured by
xorg and where is some documentation (thx for the radeon manual hint!).
Spoken as a user: Since that autoconfiguration change in xorg, Im a little
helpless, to find the right point to tweak in some cases.

greetz & thx

Youre right. Its an X/radeon problem. So sorry for being OT and not
investigating enough.
So, the rest is just FYI (or for PPC users' Info).

Below this I wrote a long email to reply, but:

Yippieh! I did it.

I found out what went wrong. What was missing was:
aptitude install firmware-linux

In that package is the r300 firmware. I noticed, that dmesg told me that the
machine wasnt able to load firmware r300 ... , because it wasnt there...
Sorry, I didnt know that it existed... (so dont think Im a dumbass Wink )
I havent seen any hint pointing to that package/firmware, since I inspected
dmesg output and searched google for that message)

So here comes a working kde 4 effects-working xorg.conf for
model : PowerBook5,4
ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10]

My new xorg.conf:
Section "Device"
Identifier "Configured Video Device"
Driver "radeon"
Option "EnablePageFlip" "on" # dont know if this is needed
Option "AccelMethod" "EXA"
EndSection
Section "Extensions"
Option "Composite" "Enable"
EndSection

So thx a lot.
