I'm running KDE 3.5 here and so are the groups I provide support for - they
are the big problem for me with KDE 4. So far I've gotten totally negative
reactions to switching from 3.5 to 4.3 because of the time and training
costs.

I still think the Warp 4 desktop was the most useful one I've found. I
still use it for supporting some instrumentation systems I designed as much
as 20 years ago - mainly because of the cross-compilers I have plus the
hardware design info (I built them from the ground up). Between the
desktop and the thread model, nothing else has come close.

Seems like, around here, everyone has fully-carpetted floors. I prefer
hardwood floors (with area or throw rugs) everywhere except kitchen and
bathroom where I prefer stone floors. Smile

That's why I seem to prefer the lighter-weight DM/WMs like WindowMaker
and icewm; they are more hardwood and stone floors where KDE and GNOME
are a more uncomfortable, deep shag carpet... Smile

But that's why it is so good to have choice!

They don't need to.
But I prefer it when there's carpet. I always have, dark carpets.

Good ol' days everybody had carpets.
They've been almost totally out of the picture for quite some time,
but I'm starting to see some sort of renaissance lately...

agree...i wonder (if IBM would open source the code) if it would be
possible to hack up a Warp (object oriented) desktop as just another
DE available... ???

like we need another DE to argue about....OH, and could argue about
'e' (the Warp version of vi--but MUCH better!!)....

IIRC, that option has been rejected a number of times by IBM. Apparently,
there's licenced, propriatary IP in OS/2 (Workplace Desktop and all) that
would prevent it from being relicenced with a FOSS licence.

I vaguely recall hearing about an OO desktop environment for X, but I have
no specifics about it. Nextstep, perhaps? Or something like it?

Fair enough. I have figured out pyNeighborhood to mount shares. Is there
a way to mount things like USB drives and keys dynamically? .. stick one
in, and it shows in a file manager?

of course you are right...had forgotten...M$ has copyright notices
inside the executables [remember, IBM & M$ teamed together to develop
the superior OS, OS/2]

I haven't looked at the source files I have in several years but ISTR that
there was another outfit (not MS) that developed the WPS and still holds
the copyrights. FWIW, there are still customers paying for IBM support of
OS/2 which is why several updates never made it out to general users. I
just liked the whole framework - it was 100% object oriented which made
programming it a pleasure once you got past the learning curve. Anyway,
IBM blew its' chance so we go with what we've got now but I'm seeing too
much bloat in both KDE and Gnome without the flexibility so m looking for a
simpler way to go without losing the features. The organizations I work
with want to settle on working environment that can be upgraded w/o having
to train the staffs on an entire new way of doing things every couple of
years. If I could make KDE4 look and feel like KDE3 I would welcome the
improvements but there are too many changes to the "how do I ...?"
questions - not to mention what feels like an early beta.

OK. Thanks.
When you installed, did you install KDE, Gnome or other environment, and
then switch the window manager, or are you using Windowmaker standalone?
