Post subject: Need advice on linux distro
Archived from groups: alt>os>linux (more info?)

I Installed Debian Linux on a spare computer 2 months ago, and that was the
first time I used linux. I've been using it almost everyday since then
(mostly from my windows laptop using ssh) and learning more. And by the
help of different docs/faqs/tutorials I know now the basics of linux. But I
don't like Debian that much, because it only got Open Source programs, and
that means that there are some things that I can't do. So what I'm going to
do is to install another Distro. But since I don't know much about
different Linux distros, I don't know what to choose.
I'm gonna provice as much info that I can about my computer and what I'm
gonna do with it.

Computer specs:
Pentium 133mhz
32mb ram
10mbps Network Card
Video card 2mb memory
Sound Card SB16
Hard Drive 1.2gb

I got a lan based on a hardware router to share my internet connection
(cable). and I got the linux computer and a windows laptop (with much
better specs). I don't want to have X or any other Desktop system, only a
command line (mostly throught ssh). I will use the computer to learn linux,
but I don't want to change distro when I've become an advanced user so I
don't want any "beginner" distro. I don't want to use red-hat. There is
also a posibility that I will run an IRC bot on the computer. I will also
do some programming (in C/C++). I also don't have access to a cd-burner so
I can't download it and burn it, and install it from there, it would be
great if I could, like in debian, get the most basic things on 4-5 floppys
and let the installer download the rest from the net or something similiar.
I'm a very advanced computer user, and have been using computer for at
least one hour everyday for 10 years now (dos and windows). If you want
more info, just ask.

Any advice on what Distro I should get?

What do you mean by this? What programs are you missing? You can
download the source and compile it for Debian. You might even be able to
get the .debs for it. If you switch, your gonna miss apt-get.

http://www.apt-get.org/ for unofficial versions/packages is one place to
look for stuff.

yeah, maybe you're right. But I still want suggestions so I have something
to compare with.

Firstly, you'll find a tough time finding a) distributions that ship
standard with non-opensource programs and b) any non-opensource Linux app
that won't run on Debian. Your argument is defunct, as the only thing that
makes Debian really different from any other distribution is it's package
management system -- you can still install apps by compiling them manually,
and you most certainly can install any program that you like (unless of
course, the program is distribution-specific, which would just be dumb).

Secondly, what can't you do with the open-source tools? Have you looked on
sites like Sourceforge and Freshmeat for a program to suit whatever it is
you want to do? Perhaps you should describe what exactly it is you think you
can't do, and someone will suggest how to do it and what software to use.

I don't know much about Linux, I based the post on what others told me, and
what I read in docs.
But maybe they are wrong. I'm gonna look into this some more, thanks for
the advice.

if you want to run some PROPER apps then you need that well known linux
distro called er windows XP (which you do NOT have to spend 3 months
configuring and getting to work with all your bits)

Whats the point of running XP when I want to learn Linux?

Well the point is that billy is being an arsehole.

Any of the latest versions of Suse Red Hat or Mandrake will get you up and
running quickly with a good variety of useful apps, as will, if you don't
mind the steeper learning curve, Slackware and Debian.

Debian in particular has a fantastic package (ie software) management
tool, called apt, that not only downloads and installs the packages, but
also any packages that the software needs that are missing from your
system. Debian also has a huge range of software available in the apt
repositories, although they tend not to be the latest and greatest
versions(not necessarily a bad thing.)

Apt is also available for Red Hat, although not with as great a variety of
software as is available for Debian.

The best thing to do, is to download a few distros, if you have the
bandwidth, or get hold of a cheap versions of the CDs from somewhere like
cheapbytes.com, and decide which flavour of linux you like best and
consider investing in a full priced box set of that version, so you get
some support and documentation.

He is an idiot that is either part of the group of MS employess that are
trying to protect their jobs or he is a sad case of someone that knows
no better and doesn't have the brain power to learn linux.

Feel free to ignore him.

Normally, yes... but look at the specs the OP said. All of those first
three will be ridiculously slow if you do want a gui, and a bit sluggish
otherwise.

I'd say stick with debian, but try slackware if you want, and then
realise how debian is much better Smile

Only if you're a little wuss that needs their hands to be held every step
of the way. =P

Debian is only 'better' when you're incapable of managing your own system
unassisted. Wink

If you are interested in a more LFS[0] approach you should try Source
Mage[1], which is very similar to LFS, but makes compilation/repair
easier.
