Im trying to use yahoo messenger (0.99.19) and / or gaim (v0.64) on a
RH8 system.
I do have sound working on the system () and can play CD's etc.
However i cannot receive any sounds from either of the above 2
programs, eg when a message is received, or someone buzzes <ding> me.
Does anyone else have sound working on either of these 2 clients, or
are both faulty.
Any suggestions as what to try would be greatly appreciated. ( PS ,
please no-one tell me to use windows, im trying to get rid oif that). |

I would recommend you to take a look at jabber at www.jabber.org
You can use Yabber to access common IM protocols like YIM or AIM or ICQ.
and it also got its own protocol (that in my opinion is better than the
others). The protocol specs are public relased wich means that there isn't
just one client by one company, there is many clients for many different
OS'es. check http://www.jabber.org/user/clientlist.php?Platform=Linux for a
list of Linux clients.

I don't use Yahoo Messenger because it crashes for me when it starts up
in Debian unstable. However, in Gaim 0.64 sound works quite well. As a
reference point, I am using a SBLive with the kernel drivers installed
into the kernel.

Yes. Have you configured your gaim to use the sounds? Post your
~/.gaimrc, this is what I have in mine.
+-----
<snip>
sound_files {
soundA { /usr/local/share/sounds/gaim/arrive.wav }
soundB { /usr/local/share/sounds/gaim/leave.wav }
soundC { /usr/local/share/sounds/gaim/receive.wav }
<snip>
+-----
You can do this in the gui, by going to
Tools --> Prefs --> Sound Events.
There you can test the .wav files you choose.

Eventually i managed to get sound working in gaim, it turns out that
it is a problem with the arts sound server that is used by
KDE3,(stopping the sound server allows the default gaim setup to play
sound) however digging deeper into gaim shows that it can use arts.
Im not sure about RedHat , but im able to use arts and gaim together
in Debian 3, and am currently writing a small doc on how to install
gaim on Debian.
Ymessenger is a different animal altogether, i cant get a peep out of
this, anyone any ideas?. ( I only want to use Ymessenger as it uses
the [CTRL-G] keystrokes to send a <ding> to other users, gaim doesnt
appear to do this, you have to type <ding>, whixh is a bit of a pain
if you use it a lot.

How does this answer his question? He asked how to get sound working in
Gaim, and you recommend he use a completely different program! Perhaps
trying to help him with his problem rather than pushing your personal
preference would be a better approach.
I'm not trying to offend you, just pointing out that I think your response
is inappropriate.

I know that I didn't answer his question. I just told him of a system that
I think he might be intrested in, if he doesn't get the sound to work.

It can be many reason for that. One and most likely to be is your sound
card it self. what kind of sound card you have and what driver it uses.
you can also see what applications at the moment using the sound
servers. do:
/usr/sbin/lsof | grep sound
and post it here.

Excuse me? Do you generally just abuse people for fun? I said nothing wrong,
have done nothing wrong and have offended no one. If this is how supposedly
"knowledgable" Linux users respond to people they consider to be not as
"l33t" as them, then I can understand why Microsoft still has the bulk of
the OS market share.
As for no one caring what I think, they don't have to --- this is a public
forum where people are allowed to post their opinions. I had the idea that
this newsgroup had some form of code of conduct that precluded complete and
utter verbal abuse. Obviously, I was wrong.
I don't mind if you disagree with me, but there is no call for blatant
abuse. I hope someone out there agrees with that -- if not, then I guess
manners and common decency are things of the past. |

The point he was making was that you didn't actually offer anything
constructive. To quote him:
>> Even more "offensive" than someone offering a solution, or alternative
>> program that works *for them*,
You took time to post a reply criticizing something but you didn't
actually offer any advice that was "on topic". You didn't say "I use
this app" or "I have heard that people like..." or "if you go to
freshmeat and type in a few key words about what you are looking for
you will get an idea of what apps are available for that". This in
conjunction with posting to a linux group with a windows only
application[0] makes it seem like the only reason you came in her was
to complain. Which would be exactly what you just accused +Pope+
+Cibao+ of.
You have been using Linux for 2 more years than I have and yet you
failed to put any of that experience into actually helping the
original poster. Have you encountered this issue before? What advice
can you offer the OP? Complaining about rudeness isn't going to help
if you don't actually offer them anything solid to go on.

I don't know if it would be any easier but I've also used this program
called centericq which is available as a debian package; but I've also
compiled it on a SuSE system as well. I don't recall about how it does
sound (or not) but perhaps it could be yet another alternative to try.
CenterICQ runs in a console window which can be (1) good or (2) bad
depending on your mood, feelings, or needs. If (1) strikes your fancy
then head on over to http://centericq.de/ and check it out.
I don't know whether it sends that "ding" or not but there is a lot of
information on the program at their website including forums and perhaps
a mailing list or two.

Personally I've given up on trying to understand and instead use what
I have learned to point out others (those who fall back on such
generalizations) that they are missing logic.

True, though some of us are not quite hopeless. I spent many years
studying the use of, workings of and repair of windows circa 95 till
ME. I had prior experience with old (true) Basic from back in the
atari days (and I thank my brother for leaving it and the book in the

Yes, I do indeed see the irony in this. My whole post was on the back of a

this to get started, I was just highly flustered.
