| I have a 2.5 SATA HD connect to USB to the PC. I am copying MP3's to the
/home/user/music directory on OpenSUSE 11.1 internal HD.
Why can I only get 900kbs transfer rate? Even USB 1.1 should go 1.5 to
12 mbs. USB 2.0 should reach 450mbs.

If you connected it to the USB AND you can transfer data, then it uses USB.
What did you do to convert the originally SATA interfacing with the USB?
Is ON THE SAME BRANCH of the USB chain something attached like a keyboard or a
serial interface?
If the latter is true, then the other devices might slow down the USB chain.
Also, you perhaps might have an old converter...

The SATA hd is connected to a 2.0 USB adapter with it's own powersupply.
The USB adapter is plugged into the PC USB port.
The motherboard may only be USB 1.1. It's an older MSI K7T-266 with a
1.33ghz processor. |

The figures of the USB 1.1 are IDEAL values. Perhaps something slowes even that
values down.
Is there the motherboard BIOS accessible for you? If so, have a look at the
entry concerning USB. IIRC some BIOSes have a misleading text, saying something
like "keep compatibility with USB 1.1", but actually they do NOT "keep
compatibility" but totally SWITCH TO USB 1.1.

If you have openSUSE 11.1 installed, why are you posting from Windoze?

I use PC-DOS 7 as my main OS. The Win 3.11 is only used because Forte Agent and
Eudora 1.54 want it.

That is bits not bytes. Ie I suspect that you are getting 900 kBytes
transfer, which is about 8Mbits /sec |

If you have a life then why are you posting this useless information?

USB is shite
First, it's only one directional , so for a typical disk I/O you get half the
speed, then every hub slow it down , try without a hub and connect directly
to the computer and it will go much faster.
And, try to mount the device with the async option and you get better speed, but
with large transfers you will end up with a huge I/O buffer and a huge load on
your cpu.
Don't mix bits and bytes, the best way to make things clear is to use:
b for bits
B for bytes
k for 1000
K for 1024
and so on.
