Have you ever missed that old windows 98 Bug which wouldn't let you
shutdown the system? Your wait is over. Thanks to the cooperation with
Microsoft, Novell now introduces this feature to Linux.

I have just installed 11.1 with all current updates and am enjoying this
new feature. Shutting down the system hangs completely. Last two messages:
Unmounting fuse control file system failed
Unmounting file system

(I've been waiting at least five minutes, so I don't expect anything
else to happen)
If I simply power off, it seems to corrupt my ext3 file system. I have
wasted time installing 11.1 three times now
1) auto configuration
2) without auto configuration
3) once again because it's just so much fun

A few other new features I noticed:
1) kde bluetooth does not work at all
2) After the first installation, if you reboot the network manager seems
to crash (it's not running although enabled in yast)
3) sshd doesn't start either, possibly due to 2)

Dear Novell, what the f*** are you up to at the moment? You know, I
wouldn't even mind buying a subscription Linux from you but for the last
one and a half years you don't seem to be able to deliver a Linux that
works. At least not on Fujitsu-Siemens hardware.
I tried installing SLED SP1 on my Laptop (same as used above) last
weekend (after 11.1 wouldn't work for the first time). It couldn't even
connect my bluetooth mouse. And spent all Saturday night migrating from
SLES SP1 to SLES SP2. Probably got screwed up when I had to force shut
off after 30 mins when gnome software manager hung while 'resolving
dependencies'.

Next example: My Server currently sort of runs SLES 10 SP2. Migrating
from SLES 10 SP1 to SLES SP2 (using your move to SP2 script) went so
terribly wrong that I now can only partially use yast2. Calling up the
install new software tool just produces
YaST got signal 11 at YCP file /usr/share/YaST2/clients/sw_single.ycp:38
/sbin/yast2: line 276: 14981 Speicherzugriffsfehler $ybindir/y2base
$module "$@" qt $Y2_GEOMETRY $Y2QT_ARGS

I even reported this in the customer center but the only response I got
was that I need a support case to get it fixed. In other words I have to
pay to fix my system after your migrate script, offered as part of the
yearly subscription, screwed it up? Dear (again) Novell, with the simple
help of two mirrors you can closely observe where you can stick that
support case!!

Novell, the only thing that makes me willing to give SLES 11 one last
try (reportedly appears in March or so) is that one of my CAD Software
providers recommends SLES/SLED. If SLES 11 turns out to be of similar
quality though, it's off to Univention for me. As I learned a few days
ago, they also offer a Linux certified for my server (Fujitsu-Siemens
Primergy Line). I just have to find a solution for my CAD software.

I've experienced this with other linux distro's...one's that have
absolutely nothing to do with MS or Novell.

I've had it get to run level 0 and never actually shut off power.
It has never failed to reboot when I requested it.

Often the failure to shut off can be attributed to hardware also.

I just had a nasty episode myself a few days back. I was screwing
around with the network configuration while I still had some CIFS Samba
mounts active to another machine. I couldn't umount the filesystems
(even with the -l and -f options), and the system refused to shut down
for reboot. Sadly I kept losing consoles to umount attempts (and
"shutdown -r now") before I thought of using sync. I had to hit the
switch, but thankfully it looks like the filesystem survived.

I guess the moral of the story may be that it's time to enable the SysRq
function on the keyboard, just in case...

Sounds like problem Novell Engineers attempting to isolate and
resolve. .

My pc, when try Shut Down or Log Off a User would just freeze up.

As long as only one user Hybernate imitates shutdown, one touch to a
keyboad key resumes.

Will try post my updates on this here, any resolution suspect will be
within updates.
