Post subject: Stability issue on intel graphic chip
Archived from groups: comp>os>linux>x (more info?)

Hi,

I'm having a stability problem on my HP-Compaq NC4200 notebook running
Lenny Debian GNU/Linux.

Each time I power on the computer it regularly starts all previous
services in its runlevel but it hangs with a black screen when starting
X, and it doesn't respond to any command, not even with SysReq Alt+Print
+B, and all I can do is to switch the computer off.

This happens occasionally two or more times, then it starts regularly.

It doesn't matter the kernel I use, the Debian official kernel or my
custom kernel are the same.

The X server always starts fine running the computer in text mode and
then "startx".

In the relevant /var/log/Xorg.0.log I can see that most of the times it
hangs soon after loading the intel chip driver
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers//intel_drv.so
so I should guess there's something wrong with this (release of) driver
and/or this release of gdm.

My graphic chip is an Intel 915 GM, Xorg version is 1:7.3+18, xserver-
xorg-video-intel version is 2:2.3.2-2+lenny5, gdm version is 2.20.7-4.

Could anyone give me some kind of help?

Thank you in advance.

I have an HP-C nc6400 (GPU=ATI Mobility Radeon X1300), and it hangs
occasionally on restoring from suspend (mem active). I think hibernate
(all to disk) works, but afterward the computer has a higher probability
of the fan not working and/or crashing. I don't know if our problems are
related.

I'd not guess.
I don't use neither suspend to ram nor suspend to disk.
Thanks for answering.

I'd look for a hardware problem - it sounds like something needs to 'warm
up'. I believe the first thing I might try would be to go into the bios
setup on startup rather than having it boot and leave it there for 10 or
15 minutes - then let it boot. If that works, then that would be a pretty
good indication that it's hardware related. Otherwise, open it up and
reseat everything. If that doesn't help - llok for a weak power supply.

Hi Ray,
do you mean to reset the bios values to their defaults?

No. I meant to open up the case and pull out everything that can come out
and then put it back in - especially the memory, but all expansion cards,
etc. I'd even pull the power connectors off and reattach. They all go back
in exactly the same place.

For the record, about 25 years ago when I transferred to White Sands
Missile Range, we were doing processing on a DEC PDP-11. You've probably
never heard of that, but every month, every card in the computer needed to
be reseated or we would start having funky errors - sort of like you're
telling about. One important troubleshooting rule is to sort out all the
easy fixes first. If one of those fixed it then you're through.

BTW is this a recent problem or has it always been that way?

I'm using this notebook since october, I bought it on eBay.
Before starting using it I opened it to clean it and disinfect the
keyboard and touchable parts...
When I first installed Debian on it I didn't have this problem, I've
started noting it recently.

However I'm not sure it can be hardware-related because there's also
Windows on it, and it works fine Sad(

Thanks for sharing with us your experience on such a "piece of history"
like the PDP-11, I've never seen one but I've read a lot of stories about
it, especially those concerning the history of Unix, I found them really
both interesting and fascinating.
