Post subject: RH9: newer versions of RPMs (with greater release numbers) not recognised
Archived from groups: linux>redhat>rpm (more info?)

Hi all,

I'm using the Add/Remove applications utility (at least it's called so in
the KDE menus) of the Red Hat 9. When trying to install Development tools,
it says openssl-0.9.7a-2 and krb5-libs-1.2.7.-10 are not installed, and it
doesn't know where to find them. While doing rpm -q openssl and rpm -q
krb5-libs shows that there are openssl-0.9.7a-20 and 1.2.7-14 installed
(note the release numbers). What should I do about it? And why doesn't RPM
recognise these newer releases?

Thanks in advance!

P.S. I've been searching for the whole day, but haven't found any solution.

Maybe you try to install RPMs with special dependencies, packages not
from/for RH9? If they required exactly the other packages install like you
posted then they are definately wrong for your syste. Be more specific if
it is not so. Post then the exactly package names and from where
they come.

Well, these are just standard RPMs that come with RH Linux (with the 3-CD
set they provide); so I don't know what other dependencies they might have
that are not included on the CDs.

The problems began when I ran RH's up2date, and then tried to add new
packages. It gave me the same kind of error, but I somehow managed to
install those. Now, though, whatever I do trying to install Development
tools, I get no further than that error message.

Do you know what could be wrong?

Kernel Panic thought it would be good to say:

Something you could try is to get a newer release of openssl and
openssl-devel and install them at the same time. My version is 0.9.7a-23,
which was what made me think about it.
I've also got krb5-libs-1.3.1-6. But I am running Fedora rather than RH9.
